What are the responsibilities and job description for the Soil Microbiologist position at KATMAI?
SUMMARY
Provide supplementary resources to the Government to successfully conduct various research and development projects for the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) Biogeochemical Sciences Branch (BSB) with a focus on Earth's cold regions. Address military readiness and public needs under all of Earth's environmental and terrain state conditions by understanding the impact and processes of biochemical interactions of substances.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct a literature review using current scientific methods and software to produce an annotated bibliography and summary that highlights existing knowledge, gaps, and emerging research.
- Perform statistical analysis of two microbial datasets using R or equivalent, applying multivariate methods to assess spatiotemporal patterns, and independently produce Word-ready reports and PowerPoint/Word-compatible figures while proactively resolving technical and microbiology-related challenges.
- Write and submit publications to CRREL BSB Soil Microbiology Team which includes all methods, results, and interpretation of analysis of microbial datasets: Completed in Word document or compatible program, free of errors/omissions.
- Characterize cold samples through culturing, isolation, and environmental analysis, applying multivariate statistical techniques in R or equivalent, and independently produce Word-ready reports and PowerPoint/Word-compatible figures while resolving technical and microbiology-related challenges.
- Perform experiments to characterize and test cold samples using published methods, apply multivariate statistical analysis in R or equivalent, and independently generate Word-ready reports and PowerPoint/Word-compatible figures while addressing technical and microbiology-related challenges.
- Perform experiments to characterize and test microorganisms in coordination with BSB staff, ensuring consistent analysis methods and providing all data and supplementary material to CRREL personnel.
- Present project findings and status updates at weekly Soil Microbiology Lab and Project Meetings, actively engaging with team members and contributing microbiology expertise.
- Participate in all aspects of research to include study design and overseeing, collecting, managing, processing, analyzing, and reporting data.
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in the area of required expertise.
- Demonstrated laboratory and field experience in microbiology and environmental analysis.
- Must obtain and maintain any necessary security access and/or background checks.

WORK SCHEDULE
Full-time. May be required to work additional hours as needed to complete assignment or project.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a variety of settings including the office, laboratory, local test areas, remote field sites, and remote duty stations. Employee will be exposed to a wide variety of clients in differing functions, personalities, and abilities.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Be capable of lifting and moving equipment weighing up to 30 pounds and withstand prolonged periods of bending, reaching, moving about, or standing. Moderate to extended periods of office work with heavy periods of computer usage. - Pay up to $150,000/yr
