TITLE: Special Education Assistant
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High school diploma or equivalent
2. Eligible for a New Mexico Instructional Assistant License
3. Post-secondaiy education in job related topics preferred
4. Effective written and verbal communication skills
OVERVIEW OF JOB DESCRIPTION: Assist certified staff to provide a well-organized, smoothly functioning class environment in which students may take full advantage of the instructional program and available resource materials and provides instructional services directly to students.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Follow local, state and federal law and adhere to Public Education Department and Local School
Board Policy.
2. Maintain confidentiality of student infonriation.
3. Assist in the movement and care of non-ambulatory students as needed.
4. Work with the classroom teacher in developing materials used for the instructional program.
5. Assist the teacher in classroom activities including but not limited to checking notebooks and
correcting papers.
6. Participate in professional development to improve skills.
7. Assist in preparing class displays, bulletin boards and other elements of an attractive, stimulating
learning environment.
8. May substitute for the teacher in emergency situations.
9. Assist in non-instructional duties, including but not limited to hall, lunchroom, and ground
monitoring as directed.
10. Operate various types of equipment used in the production of instructional materials.
11. Perform other relevant tasks as assigned.
REPORTS TO: Principal
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Work year will be in accordance with current schedule. Salary to be determined by individual training and experience level on current Assistant Paraprofessional Salary Schedule.
