Under the general supervision of the Director of Centralized Payment Center in the Office of Judicial Administration, the Lead Staff Accountant performs professional accounting work for the Kansas Judicial Branch. This role involves managing complex accounting duties and coordinating branch-wide financial responsibilities.

The Lead Staff Accountant manages programs with significant fiscal responsibilities and advises on related procedures, policies, and technology impacting the program areas.  In a supervisory capacity, the Lead Staff Accountant reviews the work of team members and provides training to ensure accuracy and efficiency.

Work performance is evaluated through reports, conferences, audits and achievement of results.

  • Leads and supports the Director in the statewide reconciliation effort, including providing high-level feedback, identifying areas for improvement, recommending actions, coordinating activities across district courts, developing documentation, monitoring progress, resolving issues, and overseeing the transition to a sustainable long-term maintenance model.
  • Supervises and oversees the accounting team, including remote staff, ensuring effective coordination, clear chain of authority, and high standards of performance.
  • Analyzes financial transactions and controls; develops training materials; conducts training sessions; and drafts fiscal rules, policies, and procedures to support consistent statewide financial operations.
  • Reviews accounting transactions to confirm compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) pronouncements, Judicial Branch fiscal rules, statutory requirements, and other authoritative guidelines. These transactions include, but are not limited to, fund disbursements, receipts and deposits, journal entries, and intra-governmental transfers.
  • Prepares financial reports, schedules, and analyses as requested to support decision-making and statewide initiatives.
  • Collaborates with CPC team members, OJA managers, and other stakeholders to inform decision-making, enhance financial operations, and align resources with organizational priorities.
  • Analyzes accounting policies and procedures with district courts and judicial branch offices, ensuring effective communication and adoption.
  • Prepares reports, schedules, forms, procedures, and directives based upon research and evaluation of issues and problems.
  • Maintains regular attendance at the workplace according to an established schedule and attends meetings and training as required. Handles interactions with others appropriately and works well in a team.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in accounting and five years of experience in audit/review work or financial accounting. Experience with supervision is strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of accounting principles. Demonstrated effective management of complex accounts.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team of employees.
  • Ability to navigate varying and unpredictable situations with multiple interruptions. Ability to manage multiple accounts, calls and inquiries simultaneously.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally with various groups. Ability to travel with overnight stays.
  • Knowledge of the general policies and practices of financial court procedures.
  • Ability to interview people and evaluate their qualifications and personal attributes. Ability to analyze program problems and needs and make effective recommendations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with court personnel, officials and the general public.
