POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Major Gifts Officer Department: Development

Position Reports To: Chief Development Officer

POSITION PURPOSE
Responsible for planning, leading, and implementing the major gifts and legacy giving programs for the Kansas Humane Society. The Major Gifts Officer will cultivate relationships with existing major and legacy donors and identify, engage, and steward prospective donors. Key activities include prospect research, developing effective solicitation strategies, guiding donors through the major giving process and beyond, maintaining donor portfolios, tracking key metrics, and preparing major gift proposals. This individual will also partner with board members, volunteers, and staff leaders to coordinate and implement long-term fundraising initiatives.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Major Gifts Portfolio Management
- Research and qualify current and prospective donors for assignment to the major gift portfolio.
- Manage a portfolio of approximately 150 individual donors and prospects with giving capacity of $5,000 , including cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding annual gifts.
- Create and implement customized cultivation and solicitation plans for each assigned donor.
- Conduct regular donor visits (in-person, phone, or virtual) to build relationships and inspire deeper investment.
- Develop personalized proposals, presentations, and impact reports to engage and retain donors.
- Track all donor interactions and progress using the organization’s CRM system, ensuring accurate and timely documentation.
- Collaborate with leadership, program staff, and communications to align donor interests with organizational priorities.
Planned Giving
- Identify, cultivate, and solicit donors for planned gifts, including bequests, beneficiary designations, and other deferred giving opportunities.
- Collaborate with the Chief Development Officer and external advisors to maintain resources and materials supporting planned giving outreach.
- Ensure planned gift prospects are stewarded and recognized appropriately.
Collaboration & Strategy
- Partner with the Chief Development Officer to establish and meet annual major gift revenue goals.
- Participate in moves management and prospect review meetings.
- Support the development team with donor events, stewardship activities, and campaigns as needed.
- Contributes to the creation of donor communications and impact materials that highlight philanthropic outcomes.
- Maintain a working knowledge of organizational priorities, challenges, and impact.
Team Interaction
- Actively support staff, board members, and volunteers in advancing KHS goals and mission.
- Serve as a trusted leader across KHS and provide support and resources when needed.
- Always Represent KHS in a professional and courteous manner (both within the organization and in the community).

Education/Certification: High school diploma or equivalent required; equivalent experience or bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, communications, business, public relations, or a related field preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and insurability under the Kansas Humane Society’s vehicle policy.
Experience Preferred: Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in fundraising, development, major gifts, or a related field. Passion for animal welfare and a belief in the power of philanthropy to save lives.
Required experience: At least one year of major gift experience in the nonprofit arena. Ideal candidates will also have experience in legacy/planned giving, will have completed specific development-related training, and have a thorough background in and experience with fundraising best practices, donor database record management, prospect research tools, and development planning
Skills and Abilities: Excellent relationship-building and interpersonal communication skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to craft compelling proposals and donor communications. Strategic thinker with the ability to develop and execute individualized donor engagement plans. Highly organized with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities. Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with staff, volunteers, and leadership. Proficiency with donor databases/CRM systems and Microsoft Office or similar tools.

WORKING CONDITIONS
General office environment and offsite donor meeting locations. Surroundings may be noisy at times. Adequate lighting. Employee and shelter animals often are in office space.
This role requires occasional travel, as well as evening, weekend, and after-hours work to support special events, donor engagements, and other key activities. Flexibility is essential to accommodate donor schedules and ensure the success of fundraising efforts.
