REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Position Reports To:  Board of Directors

Positions Supervised:  Chief Financial Officer, Chief Development Officer, Chief Operations Officer, Chief Human Resources Officer and Lead Veterinarian


POSITION PURPOSE

This executive leadership position plays a key role in creating and implementing the organization’s strategic plan. The CEO is responsible for all operations of the Kansas Humane Society providing visionary leadership to champion successful, sustainable growth and evolution of the Kansas Humane Society in support of its mission. This role communicates effectively and establishes credibility throughout the organization, Board of Directors, and community.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Board of Directors

  • Work closely with the Board Chair to build a positive and collaborative partnership with the Board of Directors, initiate and maintain a structure for the work of the board, plan efficient and productive meetings, and engage individual board members.
  • Work with the board and staff to develop a strategic plan that includes measurable goals and objectives. Develop an annual work plan that ensures the achievement of goals and objectives.
  • Actively participate in the identification, solicitation, and recruitment process of new board members.
  • Ensure the board receives timely reports on the operation of the organization, including program assessment, financial information, budget monitoring, and progress toward identified goals.
  • Keep the board informed of innovation, new knowledge and best practices in animal welfare, board governance and the non-profit sector.

 

Programs and Services

  • Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services that support the Kansas Humane Society mission. Administers and monitors revenues and expenses in relation to annual budget with regular review of goals and budget.

 

Personnel

  • Develop a staffing structure that supports the efficient delivery of programs and services, accomplishment of major goals, and fulfillment of the organization’s mission.
  • Promote an organizational culture that fosters passion for the mission, positive communication, effective collaboration, teamwork, and a common organizational vision.
  • Recruit, inspire, motivate, and empower a highly effective management team. Support their collective and individual growth and professional development.
  • Demonstrate and model a positive attitude, ethical behavior, professional and personal integrity, and an appropriate work/life balance.
  • Leads and supports senior leadership in achieving performance expectations and strategic outcomes, fostering a culture of continuous improvement through clear expectations, feedback, and professional development.

 

Community and Fund Development

  • Promotes the organization within the community and develops relationships to ensure a broad base of sustainable funding resources.
  • Cultivates and sustains strong community relationships to advance philanthropic engagement, visibility, and long‑term major donor support.
  • Strengthen and oversee the organization’s fundraising program, including supporting the board’s involvement in fundraising, personally cultivating, and soliciting donors, and supervising the implementation of the annual development plan.
  • Oversee the development of short-term and long-term strategies to strengthen and grow overall fundraising revenue. Monitors and assesses fundraising expenses, including the allocation of organizational resources to meet fundraising goals as approved by the board.
  • Lead the staff and board in the continued growth of endowment funds.

 

Financial

  • Provides executive leadership in establishing and maintaining sound financial controls that protect organizational assets, ensure transparent financial reporting, support regulatory compliance, and promote long‑term financial sustainability.
  • Lead the staff and board in developing a realistic annual budget; make financial decisions consistent with the budget as approved by the board.
  • Provide regular, timely internal financial statements to the board of directors that compare performance to budget and to the previous year or other benchmark.
  • Monitor and plan adequate cash flow to cover operational needs.
  • Conduct multi-year financial analysis, review trends, and engage the board in discussions about financial stability and sustainability, including the development of adequate operating reserves and continued growth of endowment funds.
  • Establishes clear expectations and shared accountability among financial staff and leadership to ensure accurate reporting, strong financial governance, and achievement of both budgetary and long‑term sustainability objectives.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION: Must have bachelor’s or master’s degree and related work experience.

EXPERIENCE PREFERRED: Significant and proven leadership skills developed through at least 5 years in senior management positions. Non-profit leadership, animal welfare management experience desirable.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE:

  • Passion for the mission of the Kansas Humane Society
  • Excellent organizational development, interpersonal, marketing, communication, administration and personnel management skills
  • Understanding of financial management and experience in developing and implementing a budget in excess of $4 million
  • Ability to develop positive and collaborative internal and external relationships, regardless of history or current perspective
  • Ability to establish a long-term vision for the organization and develop effective strategy to achieve that vision
  • Personal style that is charismatic, able to earn the respect of others quickly, people-oriented, proactive, analytical, decisive, adaptable, and high energy with a sense of humor

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Must be well organized, detail oriented, self-motivated, and disciplined. Must possess the ability to work with people of all socio-economic statuses / backgrounds and adjust one’s personal approach accordingly. Must be computer literate in a Windows environment and work well within a multiple team environment.


PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION

Talking: Ability to speak effectively and communicate clearly.

Average Hearing: Able to hear average conversations.

Repetitive Motion: The employee is regularly required to type, stand, sit, kneel, and squat.

Finger Dexterity: The employee is regularly required to use hands to type.

Average Vision: Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Physical Strength: The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Employee may also walk or sit for long periods of time.


WORKING CONDITIONS

Performs work in a professional office setting with some exposure to companion animals. Physical demands of the position include frequent walking, standing, sitting, bending, lifting small items (25 lbs), carrying (25 lbs), speaking, hearing, seeing and depth perception.

 

WORK HOURS

Position requires a minimum of 40-45 hours per week. Typical office hours are approximately 8:00 am-5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.  Expected to work extended hours as needed, including occasional evening/weekend hours for events, training, or meetings.


MENTAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION

Reasoning Ability: Ability to make decisions independently, must have respect for the human / animal bond. Ability to deal with a variety of variables under only limited standardization.

Mathematics Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions.

Language Ability: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents. Ability to communicate clearly.
