Join the Kansas Radiation Control Program as a Health Physicist, where your expertise will directly impact public health and safety through the inspection and oversight of X-ray machine.

What You'll Do:

  • Perform on-site inspections to ensure X-ray based equipment is safely used, stored, and disposed of, in line with Kansas laws and regulations.
  • Evaluate unique use cases and issue waivers of regulatory requirements if necessary.
  • Assess radiation exposure to patients, staff, the public, and calculate safety thresholds to ensure proper protection.
  • Prepare clear, concise written reports documenting inspection findings and compliance.
  • Review X-ray machine registration applications, including evaluating operator qualifications and shielding plans.
  • Collaborate on the creation of technical materials related to regulations and guidance documents.
  • Participate in specialized radiological emergency response training and drills, including nuclear power plant emergency scenarios, and be ready to respond to real-world incidents involving the release or mishandling of radioactive materials, ensuring public and environmental safety.

What We’re Looking for:

  • Licenses Required:American Registry of Radiologic Technologist and Kansas License Radiologic Technologist certifications (must be maintained throughout employment).
  • Strong knowledge of radiation safety and Kansas radiological regulations.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent report writing and technical communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team to ensure the safety and regulatory compliance of X-ray services.

Position Summary & Responsibilities

Review, evaluate, and process requests for waivers, exemptions, or variances from x-ray regulations in cases involving new technologies, unique clinical applications, or other circumstances where regulatory flexibility may be appropriate while maintaining radiation safety. Gather technical information from registrants, evaluate equivalent protective measures, and prepare written recommendations for approval or denial. Approved waivers, exemptions, and variances are reviewed by the unit supervisor or team lead for completeness and accurate citation of regulations and statutes.

Perform on-site inspections of small and large, complex x-ray registrants to determine if the use, possession, transfer, disposal, and storage of x-ray producing equipment are in accordance with K.S.A. 48-1601 et. seq. Complete testing of x-ray equipment with a multi-parameter x-ray detection system to determine compliance. Gather information from each registrant through interview to determine compliance with regulations. Review qualifications of x-ray producing equipment users and calculate radiation exposure potential to employees and the public. Inspection reports are reviewed by the unit supervisor or team lead for completeness and accurate citation of the regulations and statutes.

Review and approve medical physicist registrations and evaluate shielding plans submitted by registrants to determine adequacy of radiation protection for workers and the public. Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

Monitor the x-ray program shared email inbox and provide technical assistance to registrants, licensees, medical providers, service personnel, and members of the public regarding x-ray regulations, registration requirements, shielding, waivers, and general compliance questions. Respond directly when appropriate and route inquiries to relevant program staff as needed to ensure timely response.

Prepare technical material relative to regulations, registration guides and information for registrants; Maintain calibration of radiation detection/measurement equipment annually; and special projects as assigned by supervisor.

Participate in section and bureau training activities to improve inspection capabilities as well as acting in the capacity of an emergency response team member for the state. Participate in radiological drills and exercises and radiological emergency preparedness training events. Respond to radiological incidents/emergencies as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education:
    • High School, GED
  • Licensing & Certification:
    • Professional Radiological Technologist - incumbent is required to maintain a professional radiological technology license while in the position (ARRT and/or Kansas LRT).
    • Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.
  • Minimum Qualifications:
    • An Associate of Science or higher degree in Radiologic Technology or completion of a certificate based radiologic technology program and two years of experience in a radiological position may be substituted for the required education.Experience in radiological fields may be substituted for education as determined relevant by agency.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Bachelor degree in Medical Imaging or Associate degree in Radiologic Technology
    • Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access

    • Experience in health physics and radiological health measurements
    • Experience with radiology, radiation therapy, nuclear medicine, mammography, CT, CV, VI, QM
    • Attendance at FDA Mammography and Diagnostic X-ray inspector training courses
    • Certification or eligible for cert of other societies or orgs dealing with radiation protection
    • Certification or eligible for certification of Radiologic Technology Primary Certification
    • Certification or eligible for certification of American Board of Radiology
    • Certification or eligible for certification of American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
    • Certification or eligible for certification of Nat'l Registry of Radiation protection Technologists
    • Certification or eligible for certification of American Board of Health Physics
    • Certification or eligible for certification of MQSA State or FDA Inspector
  • Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements:
    • Employee must obtain certification by a physician to utilize personal protective equipment including respiratory protection equipment and be able to maintain that qualification within twelve months of hire.
    • Completion of American Registry of Radiologic Technologist Credentialing.Must be licensed or able to be licensed as a Radiologic Technologist by the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts.
    • Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate: A valid Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate is a condition of employment for all employees of the State of Kansas.
