What You'll Do

As a Correctional Officer, you'll play an essential role in maintaining the safety and security of the facility while supervising incarcerated individuals and supporting daily operations.

Responsibilities include:

  • Supervise incarcerated individuals in housing units, work assignments, classrooms, dining areas, recreation, and other program areas
  • Maintain safety, security, and order by enforcing facility rules and policies
  • Conduct resident counts, security inspections, and searches to prevent contraband
  • Monitor behavior, document incidents, and prepare accurate reports
  • Respond to emergencies using approved safety procedures, de-escalation techniques, and physical intervention when necessary
  • Escort incarcerated individuals throughout the facility as required
  • Operate radios, restraints, and other security equipment
  • Work collaboratively with fellow staff to maintain a secure environment
  • Provide first aid or CPR when necessary

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid driver's license
  • Pass a background investigation, physical examination, and drug screening
  • No felony convictions
  • No adult misdemeanor domestic battery convictions (unless eligible under Kansas law)
  • Kansas Tax Clearance required following a conditional offer of employment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Correctional Officer Certification (earned through KDOC Basic Training)
  • CPR/First Aid certification and annual weapons qualification
  • Previous experience in corrections, law enforcement, military, or security
  • Strong communication, observation, and conflict resolution skills
