Summary

The Instructional Designer supports faculty in designing, developing, and enriching engaging, accessible, and inclusive learning experiences across all delivery methods: online, hybrid, hyflex, remote, and face-to-face. This role champions the thoughtful and inclusive integration of educational technologies, including generative AI, Open Educational Resources (OER), and Accessibility, to improve student learning, equity, and success. This position is a vital member of a team whose goal is to promote quality courses across the college, regardless of course delivery, and will need to be collaborative and work with many individuals across the college.

Position Description

  • Provide support for the Online Education Services department's mission of delivering quality
  • instructional content and LMS-based support, including tutorials, documentation, analytics, and
  • outcomes assessment tools.
  • Collaborate with the Instructional Design Coordinator II and faculty to design, revise, and align
  • courses with institutional learning outcomes, accessibility standards, and quality frameworks
  • (e.g., Quality Matters, OSCQR, UDL), utilizing the college's quality assurance model for online
  • courses and training, while upholding and promoting established course design standards.
  • Supports academic departments in adopting and adapting Open Educational Resources (OER) to
  • reduce student costs while improving course quality and inclusivity.
  • Assists in delivering professional development opportunities on topics such as instructional
  • design best practices, AI-informed teaching strategies, and technology ethics.
  • Provides hands-on support for faculty implementing new digital tools, including AI-powered
  • applications, ensuring transparency and compliance with institutional data and privacy policies.
  • Collaborates with the faculty development staff to promote and support the pedagogical
  • initiatives of the college.
  • Assists in the upgrading of management and testing of the learning management system and other
  • supported tools as necessary.
  • Serves on committees reviewing emerging software and system tools for faculty and students
  • adoption.
  • Completes and maintains appropriate training and certification for the course management
  • system, course analytics, and other software and tools managed by Online Education Services.
  • Works with the Instruction Design team to review and assess analytics related to students
  • engagement, learning, and the learning management system.
  • Serves on appropriate committees that further online education goals within the college's
  • strategic plan.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Knowledge Of:

  • Instructional design theories and models (e.g., ADDIE, backward design, UDL).
  • Principles of online and hybrid pedagogy, including learner engagement strategies.
  • Integration and evaluation of learning technologies, including LMS platforms (Blackboard, D2L Brightspace, Canvas).
  • Open Educational Resources (OER) licensing, curation, and implementation.
  • Accessibility and compliance standards (ADA, WCAG, Section 508).
  • Principles of AI use in education, generative tools, and technology ethics.
  • Project management and faculty development best practices.

Skills In

  • Designing and developing digital learning assets and multimedia instructional materials.
  • Leading collaborative curriculum design projects with faculty and staff.
  • Using LMS tools for course design, analytics, and quality review.
  • Conducting effective training sessions and professional development workshops.
  • Applying critical thinking and problem-solving to instructional challenges.
  • Communicating clearly in both written and verbal formats.

Abilities To

  • Translate pedagogical theory into practical course design recommendations.
  • Guide faculty in adopting equitable, technology-enhanced teaching strategies.
  • Manage multiple projects and meet deadlines within a fast-paced academic environment.
  • Stay current with advances in educational technologies, learning science, and instructional trends.
  • Collaborate across academic departments with creativity, diplomacy, and cultural awareness.
  • Model ethical decision-making in the application of AI and technology across teaching and learning.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or higher degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Education, or a related discipline.
  • At least two (2) years of higher education experience in course design, faculty development, or
  • instructional technology.
  • Strong understanding of learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard, D2L Brightspace,
  • Canvas) and digital learning tools.
  • Commitment to inclusive and accessible course design based on UDL and equitable teaching principles.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to mentor and collaborate across disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's higher degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, or related field.
  • Experience leading OER initiatives or faculty incentive programs for open and affordable learning materials.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of AI tools in education and their ethical, privacy, and accessibility implications.
  • Proven ability to manage projects involving cross-departmental collaboration and timeline coordination.
  • Experience in a community college environment serving diverse learners.

WORKING CONDITIONS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, and sit. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift items.

WORK SCHEDULE

40 hours per week. Must be able to work a variable schedule/hour to meet operational needs. May require evening and weekend hours.
