Special Education Life Skills Aide - Grades 4-5

Kankakee Valley Intermediate School is seeking a hardworking, caring, and motivated Special Education Aide to support students in our Life Skills program for grades 4–5. The successful candidate will work closely with the classroom teacher and other staff members to provide a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of our students.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

• Provide individualized and small-group instructional support under the direction of the classroom teacher.
• Assist students with academic, functional, social, and behavioral goals as outlined in their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
• Assist individual students with self-care, hygiene, toileting, feeding, mobility, and other daily living activities as needed.
• Work collaboratively with the cooperating teacher, special education staff, therapists, and other school personnel.
• Support students in developing independence, communication, social skills, and appropriate classroom behaviors.
• Assist students during transitions throughout the school day, including arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, specials, and other school activities.
• Help implement classroom routines, instructional activities, and behavior-support strategies.
• Collect or assist with collecting student progress data as directed by the classroom teacher.
• Prepare and organize instructional materials and maintain an orderly learning environment.
• Provide supervision to ensure student safety and well-being throughout the school day.
• Maintain student confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism when working with students, families, and staff.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the classroom teacher or building administration.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working with children, particularly students with disabilities, is preferred.
• Ability to work patiently and positively with students who have a variety of academic, behavioral, communication, and physical needs.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Dependable, flexible, and willing to assist wherever needed.
• Ability to follow teacher direction while also demonstrating initiative.
• A genuine desire to help students grow in confidence, independence, and success.
