Tax Manager

Kane Tax & Accounting PLLC
Coeur d'Alene, ID Full Time
POSTED ON 8/25/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 9/21/2026
Tax Manager — Remote

Kane Tax & Accounting is a rapidly growing CPA firm based in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, focused on helping business owners with tax compliance, proactive tax planning, and year-round advisory.

We’re looking for an experienced CPA or EA to take ownership of our tax production function and help us build the next stage of the firm.

This is not a role where you’ll be one of 50 managers buried inside a large accounting firm.

You’ll work directly with the owner, have significant autonomy, own client relationships and tax production, and help shape how the tax department operates as we continue to grow.

We use technology and AI aggressively, keep unnecessary bureaucracy to a minimum, and are building a modern accounting firm rather than recreating the traditional public accounting model.

Compensation & Benefits

  • $100,000–$120,000 base salary, depending on experience
  • 3 weeks paid time off
  • 3% 401(k) match
  • 100% remote
  • Fridays off during the summer
  • Paid holidays
  • Reasonable work hours
  • Generally 40 hours per week year-round
  • Tax season may occasionally reach approximately 50 hours per week, but we are intentionally not building a 60–70 hour busy-season culture

What You’ll Own

You will be responsible for the day-to-day tax production function of the firm.

That includes:

  • Preparing and reviewing individual and business tax returns
  • Primarily 1040, 1120-S, and 1065 returns
  • Managing returns from initial preparation through completion
  • Communicating directly with clients
  • Gathering missing information and resolving tax questions
  • Preparing tax projections
  • Assisting with proactive tax planning
  • Responding to client tax questions throughout the year
  • Handling tax notices and related correspondence
  • Maintaining quality and accuracy across the tax workflow
  • Helping improve our internal tax processes, checklists, and systems
  • Using AI and automation tools to make tax production faster and more efficient

The owner will remain available for final review, complex technical issues, and higher-level planning, but the goal is for you to independently own the production process rather than simply prepare work for someone else to manage.

Tax Planning

Tax planning is a major part of our firm and where we are continuing to invest heavily.

You do not need to walk in knowing every strategy we use.

We already have established tax-planning processes, checklists, and frameworks, and we can train the right person on our approach.

However, you should:

  • Have strong tax fundamentals
  • Be interested in proactive planning rather than only compliance
  • Be comfortable learning new strategies
  • Be able to explain tax concepts clearly to business owners
  • Want to become increasingly involved in client planning conversations

Who We’re Looking For

You may be a good fit if you:

  • Are a CPA or EA
  • Have 5 years of public accounting or tax experience
  • Have experience with both individual and business returns
  • Are comfortable working independently
  • Have worked at a smaller firm where you were expected to handle a wide range of responsibilities
  • Can communicate directly and confidently with clients
  • Are organized and able to manage multiple deadlines
  • Take ownership instead of waiting to be told what to do next
  • Enjoy improving processes
  • Are comfortable learning and using new technology
  • Are interested in AI and automation and see them as tools to make your work better
  • Want autonomy and responsibility rather than layers of management
  • Are looking for a long-term role where you can help build something

You Probably Won’t Like This Job If...
  • You need detailed instructions for every task
  • You prefer staying in one narrow tax specialty
  • You dislike client communication
  • You are uncomfortable with technology changing how accounting work gets done
  • You believe the best process is automatically the one your previous firm has used for the past 20 years
  • You want to disappear into a large organization where someone else makes every decision

We are looking for someone who is proactive, resourceful, curious, and willing to figure things out.

Technology

Our current technology stack includes tools such as:

  • Drake Tax
  • TaxDome
  • QuickBooks Online
  • Gusto
  • Microsoft 365
  • AI and automation tools used throughout the firm

Prior Drake experience is not required. Experience with professional tax preparation software is expected, and we can train you on our specific systems.

Work Environment

This is a 100% remote position and candidates may be located anywhere in the United States.

You will need to be regularly available during normal Pacific Time business hours for internal communication and client meetings.

Our goal is to build a firm where excellent people can do high-quality work without sacrificing their lives to public accounting.

We care about getting the work done correctly, serving clients well, improving constantly, and building efficient systems.

We do not care about keeping people online until 9:00 PM simply because it is March.

Why This Role Is Different

At a large accounting firm, you may be one manager among dozens or hundreds.

Here, you will have the opportunity to effectively build and own the tax department of a growing CPA firm.

You’ll work closely with the owner, have a meaningful voice in how the firm operates, and play a central role in helping us scale.

If you’re an experienced tax professional who wants more autonomy, fewer unnecessary hours, direct client relationships, and the opportunity to help build a modern accounting firm, we’d like to hear from you.

To Apply

Please submit your resume along with a short note answering:

  1. Why are you interested in leaving your current role or firm?
  2. What types of tax returns do you work with most frequently?
  3. Describe your experience managing tax returns and client relationships independently.
  4. What is one way you have used technology, automation, or AI to improve your work?
  5. What are you looking for in your next firm that you do not have today?
