What are the responsibilities and job description for the Athletic Trainer position at Kane County Cougars?

Athletic Trainer
This is a traveling position that works every game home and road roughly April 24th through Sept 30th, including holidays.
Reports To: Cougars Field Manager and/or the Cougars Vice President/General Manager

This position requires long hours and works in a demanding, fast-paced environment in all aspects of weather. This position will be working alongside our on-field coaching staff to coordinate the prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and reconditioning of the players; along with medical professionals when outside treatment is needed. The ideal candidate will be committed, team focused, open minded, driven, of good character, and demonstrate positive teammate qualities. Time management and attention to detail will determine the outcome of your performance.  Attendance is mandatory. Must be able to lift 40lbs.

Medical Duties:
  • Consult and collaborate with other members of the Cougars medical, and coaching staffs.
  • Prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and management of athletic injuries.
  • Identify and meet the goals and needs of our players through a holistic and total body approach.
  • Develop individualized, player-centered care plans, baseball and throwing progressions.
  • Assist in managing players in the weight room.
  • Timely, effective, and concise communication of injuries and illnesses with members of the partnering medical staff, members of the coaching staff, and the front office staff.
  • Implement health and performance screening.
  • Provide quality, personalized, and evidence-based care with best available interventions.
  • Be able to provide mental/psychological support throughout the rehabilitation process.
  • Provide emergency aid (basic wound care, BLS/CPR/AED) when necessary.
  • Promote and provide an example of a healthy lifestyle, fitness, and wellness.
  • Promote, facilitate, and be an example of lifelong learning, critical thinking, and creativity in your practice.
  • Demonstrate an eagerness to learn from peers within the organization and to execute organizational evaluation techniques, treatment and therapeutic exercise principles.
  • Follow professional guidelines, laws, and standards set by Professional, Federal, and State Licensing boards.
  • Follow and enforce all League, state and local covid protocols and mandates.
  • Be aware of Emergency Action/Operation Plan with the organization and the local EMS.
  • Organize and maintain a professional training room (e.g., cleanliness, safety, inventoried medical supplies/rehabilitation equipment, professional dress code and behavior, availability to players/staff to render treatment/assistance prior to daily schedule, adherence to OSHA and league medical facility/training room rules and policies).
Administrative Duties:
  • Maintain player and staff electronic medical records and hard copy files (e.g., daily documentation of objective findings, treatments, doctor appointments, correspondence from doctors, diagnostic testing, and any other relevant medical information pertaining to individuals).
  • Update and maintain accurate daily injury/maintenance reports that will be sent daily to appropriate medical and front office staff.
  • Establish and maintain rapport with local and organizational team physicians.
  • Establish a network with healthcare professionals in rehabilitation and sports medicine.
  • Provide leadership and education for all members of the team.
  • Coordinate local entry and exit physicals and doctor appointments.
  • Assist in player development responsibilities, hotel bookings and distribution of per diem.
  • Prepare travel trunks and inventory for road trips.

Job Requirements (must meet the following minimum requirements):
  • Current NATA BOC Certification/ Athletic Training Licensure.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work within a team approach to player health.
  • Strong evaluation, manual therapy and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Available to work 10 hours per day, typically 6 days a week.
  • Valid passport.
  • Have a positive professional image and demeanor.
  • Physical requirements include the ability to: stand for long periods of time; provide manual intervention and resistive exercise to professional baseball players; demonstrate complex movement patterns and exercises; throw/play catch; and transfer/lift patients independently.

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working as an athletic trainer with collegiate and/or professional baseball players.
  • Desired continuing education coursework: SFMA, PRI, DNS, ART.
  • General baseball knowledge and exposure to professional and/or baseball culture.
  • Strong desire to model and influence positive, winning clubhouse culture.
