CERTIFIED Substitute Teacher (Retired)

Overview:
Kanawha County Schools is obligated under State Law to place CERTIFIED SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS in classrooms. Certified Substitutes is defined as a person who holds a valid teaching certification issued by West Virginia Department of Education.

Qualifications:
To be considered for a CERTIFIED SUBSTITUTE, Kanawha County Schools requires:

1. A minimum overall G.P.A. of 2.5.
2. Completed on-line application.
3. Official college transcripts.
4. Letter of interest and resume.
5. Three letters of reference

Job Goal:  The substitute will assume and carryout the daily duties/activities of the regular teacher by instructing students.  

Responsibilities:

1. Develop lesson plans for approval by school principal.
2. Implements lesson plans to achieve instructional objectives.
3. Fosters a classroom climate conducive to learning;
4. Check daily papers.
5. Demonstrate satisfactory teaching techniques
6. Assume the duties and activities of regular teacher 
7. Supervise students at all times.
8. Demonstrate respect for privacy of school and pupils
9. Monitors student progress towards mastery of instructional goals and objectives;
10. Communicates effectively within the educational community, and with parents on a regular basis; 
11. Meets professional responsibilities, and
12. Sets high positive expectations for student performance.                                                                                                                           
13. Employs a variety of instructional strategies to facilitate student achievement
14. Establishes procedures and rules that enhance learning.                                              
15. Encourages and acknowledges individual student accomplishments and appropriate behavior.
16. Treats students in a fair and equitable manner.                                                                                                                                    
17. Organizes teaching strategies to maximize allocated instructional time to increase student learning.
18. Directs and adequately supervises students to be on task quickly at the beginning of each instructional activity.   
19. Maximizes student time on task.    
20. Monitor and evaluates student progress.
21. Provides feedback on student work.
22. Professional Work Habits: Definition: Demonstrates behavior that reflects established professional responsibilities (i.e. attendance, punctuality and verbal/non- verbal communication).
23. Adheres to established laws, policies, rules and regulations.    
24. Interacts appropriately with students, parents, other educational personnel.
25. Commands respect by example in appearance, manners, behavior and language.

Selection Procedure:
Interview

If an applicant is recommended for hire, s/he will be hired contingent upon;

1. A negative drug screen
2. A cleared criminal background check (fee paid by applicant)
3. A negative tuberculin test
4. A fitness for duty physical
5. Approval by the school board members
