The Human Resources Manager plays a highly visible, hands-on leadership role, partnering closely with the CFO and leadership team to oversee all facets of HR and related administrative functions. This includes talent acquisition, employee relations, compliance, payroll oversight, benefits administration, and policy development, as well as active involvement in safety, risk management, and regulatory adherence. This position also contributes to broader organizational initiatives such as compensation strategy, succession planning, and community engagement. This role is ideal for a well-rounded HR professional who thrives in a dynamic manufacturing environment and values an employee-ownership culture.
This position will be onsite in Kalkaska, MI.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
• Lead full-cycle talent acquisition for hourly and salaried roles, including workforce planning, recruiting, onboarding, and offboarding.
• Foster a positive workplace culture through coaching, employee engagement, and recognition initiatives.
• Oversee payroll operations, including bi-weekly processing, payroll tax compliance, and year-end reporting (W-2 reconciliation).
• Develop, update, and communicate HR policies and procedures; maintain the employee handbook to ensure compliance.
• Serve as a strategic advisor on employee relations matters, including performance management, conflict resolution, and disciplinary actions.
• Ensure compliance with federal and state safety regulations (e.g., MIOSHA, MDOT, BRC, AIB); lead safety initiatives and maintain required injury and incident reporting.
• Maintain expertise in employment laws (e.g., EEO, ADA, FMLA, Title VII) and ensure organizational compliance across HR practices.
• Oversee benefits and leave administration, including vendor coordination, open enrollment, employee education, and regulatory compliance.
• Maintain accurate, confidential employee records and oversee HR data integrity, reporting, and analytics (e.g., headcount, turnover, safety, training).
• Partner with leadership to maintain job descriptions and support performance management processes, including annual reviews.
• Support audits and regulatory filings (Payroll, ESOP, 401(k)).
• Build and maintain strong relationships with executive leadership, the Board, and external partners, including professional associations and community organizations.
• Lead compensation strategy and workforce planning, including market benchmarking, succession planning, risk mitigation, unemployment claims management, and grant administration.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
• PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP certification a plus.
• Minimum of five years of progressive Human Resources experience, with prior leadership or management responsibility preferred.
• Experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment preferred.
• Demonstrated experience managing multiple HR functions including payroll.
• Strong working knowledge of federal and state employment laws and regulations.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate policies and influence stakeholders at all levels.
• Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
• Spanish language proficiency is a plus but not required.
