Job Description
This position provides direct patient observation in order to redirect unsafe patient behaviors in a clinical setting. The Patient Safety Sitter is one who strictly performs within their scope of practice as they are trained in basic activities related to the patient’s safety, care and comfort. The Sitter prevents the patient from harming themselves or removing medical equipment that could delay the healing process, usually by means of verbal interaction (reassurance and reorientation) and takes appropriate action when required. The patient who is to be closely observed may have special needs but does not require specialized life sustaining equipment to be monitored. A Sitter observes and accurately reports immediately to the nurse any change in the patient’s behavior or status. The patient to be closely observed may exhibit behavioral health concerns such as suicidal ideations, depression, or limited coping. This position functions as a member of the nursing care team and works under the direction and close supervision of a Registered Nurse. Education And Credentials
High school graduate or equivalent; completion of health care classes preferred. Heartsaver/First Aid or BLS within first 90 days of hire; completion of the Introduction to CPI training during orientation.
Experience
Prior experience in a clinical setting preferred. The employee in this position must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide a safe environment based on the age of the patients served. Must be able to demonstrate an understanding to maximize patient safety, employ interventions and interact with patient to increase engagement and redirect patient behavior. Must also possess the ability to communicate observed changes in behavior/activity to the Registered Nurse.
