Position Summary: The custodian position is responsible for cleaning and maintaining the library’s public and office environments. This position serves both the Central location.
Duties And Responsibilities
Physical demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to travel independently within the office and patron areas of the library and in the communities served. In the work environments described below, the position requires effective communication and exchange of information with others, constant repositioning of self to clean restrooms, public and office spaces. Frequently utilizes cleaning equipment such as mops, brooms, vacuums, etc. Occasionally moves objects up to 50 pounds. Some local travel outside the library may be required. Work environment: While performing the duties of this job outside of the library environment, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
Salary
$15.30 an hour; $14.00 for probationary employees. This position belongs in the Union of the Kalamazoo Public Library Library Aides/Hourly Custodians.

Duties And Responsibilities
- Performs routine and comprehensive custodial care and maintenance of assigned facilities, furnishings, and grounds.
- Monitors building conditions and reports problems.
- Reports and responds to emergency calls for custodial assistance.
- Cover for absences at other branches as needed.
- Uses library systems to communicate work area problems and to correspond on progress of work.
- Acts as a steward for maintaining FM’s policies and guidelines throughout KPL.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Evidence of excellent attendance, punctuality and dependability.
- Ability to use cleaning materials and equipment with skill, efficiency, and safety.
- Ability to operate vacuum cleaners, lawn mowers and other equipment.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the position as listed below.
