SUMMARY OF POSITION
Working under the Chair of the Ceramics Department of the Kirk Newman Art School (KNAS), the Clay Mixer will contribute to the Ceramics Department by supporting the clay needed to operate the department and to support its students, faculty, and guests on behalf of the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. Candidates must be able to mix a range of different clays and maintain a clean, stocked, safe, and professional environment. The position is expected to work up to 12 hours a week while classes are in session as well as one week before classes begin. Occasional weekend and night work may be needed.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
- Mix clay (stoneware, porcelain, earthenware) as needed for onsite ceramics classes in the Department as well as Children’s Department programs, Kalamazoo Valley Community College, and Education for the Arts classes.
- Maintain a clean and safe clay mixing room.
- Operate and maintain the equipment needed for the job with care.
- Report low inventory of dry materials to immediate supervisor.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
Additional duties to support the operational needs of the Ceramics Department may be occasionally required.

BENEFITS PROVIDED BY THE CERAMICS DEPARTMENT FOR THIS POSITION
- One personal tuition waiver for the Clay Mixer for a course, per term in which work is performed (responsible for lab fee, materials and other policies outlined in the waiver request form).
- Kiln units for the given class and term, if the selected class is in Ceramics Department.
- No other benefits are provided.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position does not supervise other employees but will report to the Chair of the Ceramics Department and will work alongside the Ceramics Technician.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Proven skills at mixing clay and managing inventories of raw materials and finished products.
- Knowledge to operate clay mixer, pug, and other equipment safely.
- Ability to work independently while following directives.
- A collegial spirit and cooperative approach that facilitates working closely with others.
