Work schedule:
The department is staffed 24/7. Campus Safety Officers may be full time or part time and may be assigned as needed to any shift(s) and a variety of schedules. The anticipated shifts for this opening are flexible and will be determined at hiring.
Position summary:
A Campus Safety Officer is a patrol officer who performs pro-active foot and mobile patrol of the College campus, and its environs as assigned, for the purpose of high visibility, crime deterrence, aid to students and faculty, and general assistance to visitors to campus. Under general supervision, the Campus Safety Officer enforces campus rules and regulations, detects and reports violations of laws and ordinances, assists in the maintenance of order, prevents crime by high visibility patrol; conducts investigation and writes reports; enforces campus parking regulations; and performs related work as required.
Examples of duties:

  • Patrols assigned area primarily on foot maintaining a high visibility; actively performs beat patrol concentrating on high incident area; regularly checks buildings for security during night time hours; secures and re-secures buildings as scheduled; monitors radio/telephone and promptly responds to calls for service received; detects and reports suspicious activity and/or needs for service by other College Departments.
  • Performs parking enforcement on campus by issuing citations for violations and movement or impound of vehicles as dictated by policy.
  • Conducts preliminary investigations; stabilizes incident scenes and summons appropriate personnel to resolve conflicts; protects crime scenes and evidence until city officers arrive; provides assistance to victims; conducts preliminary interviews of victims and witnesses; collects descriptions on suspects and communicates same to city dispatch; assists city officers within policy; maintains visual contact of suspects, if possible, from a safe distance but does NOT apprehend suspect; advises victims on procedures to follow in prosecution.
  • Conducts accident investigations of all collisions occurring on campus (private property) and reports statutory cases to city officers.
  • Provides a variety of service type duties to students, employees and visitors; reports any unusual condition of the campus or hazardous condition to competent authority for correction; performs traffic direction when required to ensure smooth flow of traffic in and out of campus.
  • Performs a wide variety of community relations functions including meeting and talking with students, employees, and citizens visiting campus; provides information and advises on safety measures; visits various campus facilities to determine needs for service; assists pedestrians and motorists and students to establish rapport and support for the Department of Campus Safety.
  • Prepares written report; prepares for and gives testimony in court from personnel notebook and prepares reports; maintains personal uniform and equipment in excellent condition as well as personal appearance at all times.
  • Attends all assigned training sessions.
  • Conducts public presentations to the Campus Community.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualification requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited High School or GED required. Prefer graduation from an accredited college or university with some course work in criminal law or social studies. Prefer experience in Campus Safety work, community service, public service, social service, and Emergency Management experience. Any combination of education and experience listed above may be considered in selection of best qualified candidate.
  • General working knowledge of laws, capabilities and limitation of private security units, jurisdictional rules and regulations of applicable local, state, and federal laws.
  • Ability to work effectively in tense situations, to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine the proper course of action; to cope with situations firmly, courteously and tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others; to react quickly, calmly and appropriately under emergency conditions.
  • Physical requirements of the job include the ability to respond immediately and appropriately to emergency situations; the ability to work irregular hours with changing shifts, to move frequently and quickly in all areas of campus, in indoor and outdoor environments, between and within buildings, with extended exposure to a variety of weather conditions in all seasons.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; to understand and execute difficult oral and written instructions; to obtain information through interviews and observation.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word and other software for documentation of general incidents, criminal reports, and other relevant data collection.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state motor vehicle operator’s license and a driving record in compliance with The College’s policies. Must be able to pass a complete background investigation.
