Position Summary
The assistant coach for Kalamazoo College Cross Country and Track & Field programs is responsible for coaching and operational duties pertaining to both cross country and track and field programs. Reporting to the Director of Cross Country and Track & Field, this 12-month, full-time position provides
- An excellent opportunity to mentor and empower players to be their best selves on and off the field; and
- The ability to build up and build upon positive relationships with prospective student-athletes and their families, colleagues, alumni, and the greater Kalamazoo community.
In addition to the above, responsibilities include
- Assist in the identification and recruitment of potential student-athletes for both programs in accordance with MIAA and NCAA rules, regulations, guidelines, and standards;
- Assist in the organization, preparation and execution of individual and team practices, training sessions and competition;
- Lead, monitor, and coordinate training and practice sessions for the sprint/hurdle/jumps group, as well as assisting in the coordination of field event athletes and coaching staff;
- Assist in the coordination and administration of the overall program as needed;
- Knowledge of and commitment to all NCAA, MIAA, and institutional rules and regulations;
- Instruct Physical Education classes as determined by the PE Department Chair and the Provost;
- Involvement in departmental and campus committees; and
- Additional duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics and Director of Cross Country and Track & Field.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree at minimum but a master’s degree is preferred, and many of the following traits:
- Previous coaching experience with a minimum of three years of coaching experience preferred or five years of an equivalent combination of education, coaching experience, and experience as a college level track and field athlete;
- A commitment to the student-athlete experience;
- Experience working with the sprints, hurdles, jumping events (pole vault not included);
- Preferred experience working with multi-event athletes (pole vault not required);
- Knowledge of multiple track and field disciplines (sprints, hurdles, multi events);
- Evidence of strong organizational, effective communication skills, self-motivation, and attention to detail;
- Current knowledge of NCAA and MIAA regulations;
- Ability to successfully recruit college-level student-athletes;
- Evidence of a commitment to academic excellence; and
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively within a wide range of constituencies and a diverse community.
About Kalamazoo College Cross Country and Track & Field
Kalamazoo College, is an NCAA Division III institution and member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA), located in southwestern Michigan.
Cross Country
The Kalamazoo College men’s cross country program was established in 1919 and became an MIAA sanctioned sport in 1922. The women’s program was established in 1982.
The program has produced two All-Americans on both the men’s and women’s teams. Both programs have produced a total of 42 All-Region runners (17 men / 25 women).
- The women’s program has ten Top 10 Regional finishes and placed 3rd in the MIAA in 2024.
- The women’s program boasts two MIAA MVP’s, two MIAA Individual Champions, and 44 All-MIAA performers in program history.
- The men’s program has produced two MIAA MVP’s, 13 MIAA Individual Champions, and 49 All-MIAA honorees.
- The men’s program has won 13 MIAA championships and finished third in 2025.
Track & Field
Kalamazoo College sponsored indoor and outdoor track and field program for student-athletes for the first time since the early 1980’s beginning in the 2025-26 academic year. The Men’s and Women’s and team competed in the MIAA indoor and outdoor seasons highlighted by one MIAA indoor champion (Men’s 5000 meters) and a dual runner-up in the MIAA outdoor championships (Women’s 1500 and 800 meters) who narrowly missed the NCAA Championship meet.
