What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Controller position at Kajima Building & Design Group, Inc.?
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Assistant Controller to support the financial operations of our growing general contracting firm. This role will assist in managing the accounting team, ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining internal controls, and supporting project accounting functions. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in construction accounting, including job costing, WIP reporting, and subcontractor compliance.
Key Responsibilities:
• Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP. • Oversee job cost accounting, including budget-to-actual analysis and cost tracking for multiple construction projects.
• Prepare and maintain Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and ensure accurate revenue recognition.
• Support the Controller in managing the general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and bank reconciliations.
• Ensure compliance with internal controls, company policies, and external regulations.
• Collaborate with project managers to review project budgets, forecasts, and financial performance.
• Assist with audits, tax filings, and year-end close processes.
• Supervise and mentor junior accounting staff.
• Participate in ERP system improvements and process automation initiatives
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred).
• 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in the construction industry.
• Strong knowledge of construction accounting principles, including percentage-of-completion and job costing.
• Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint, or similar construction ERP systems).
• Advanced Excel skills and experience with financial reporting tools.
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, project-driven environment
