What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sleep Technician II position at Kaiser Permanente?
Performs general sleep laboratory respiratory care procedures with general oversight of the Poly Tech Lead and the medical director (M.D. or D.O) or designee. This job assists the Poly Technologists to expedite the testing process efficiently and safely. The technician develops basic polysomnographic testing and therapeutic intervention competency in the sleep laboratory and ambulatory settings. This is an entry level technician position with the expectation that the tech will obtain national board sleep credential in a 1-2-year period following orientation.
Essential Responsibilities:
- With Technologist and designate oversight:
- Verify medical order and protocol. Review data in patient records, collects, and evaluates additional clinical data and identifies the appropriate procedures to meet test and sleep therapy objectives.
- Explain polysomnographic procedures and orient patient to sleep laboratory.
- Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.
- Prepare and calibrate polysomnographic equipment to determine proper functioning. Perform appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals.
- Follow testing, therapy titration, and monitoring protocols (e.g., Multiple Sleep Latency Test, Maintenance of Wakefulness Test, parasomnia studies, PAP, oxygen titration) to collect appropriate data and meet target objectives.
- Follow lights out procedures to establish and document baseline values (body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory and heart rates, etc).
- Assist with polysomnographic data acquisition monitoring to obtain scorable, artifact-free polysomnogram. Identify and reports signal abnormalities and artifacts.
- Assist with appropriate interventions (e.g., for patient safety and positive airway pressure, and oxygen administration with oversight).
- Document routine observations as required, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and significant events to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
- Follow end of study lights on procedures to verify integrity of collected data and complete data collection process (repeats physiological and instrument calibrations and instruct patient on completing questionnaires, etc.)
- Actively participate in equipment care and routine maintenance, monitors supply and inventory.
- Select, assemble, use, and troubleshoot home and in-lab respiratory care equipment together with POLY I and/or POLY II technologists.
- Participate in established Quality Assurance, Improvement and Assessment Programs.
- Develop skills in recognizing sleep stages. Participates in scoring compatibility testing monthly.
- Assist the Medical Assistants as requested to maintain efficient workflow.
Qualifications:
- Access to the internet to attend virtual training.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in customer service, interpersonal relations, oral communication, results orientation, teamwork, written communication, and organization.
- Associates degree with major in respiratory therapy.
- Basic Life Support from American Heart Association
- Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in word processing and spreadsheet PC applications.
- Night shift work experience.
- Demonstrated use of virtual learning programs.
- Experience with sleep-disordered breathing treatment and/or compliance monitoring.
- Experience with sleep-disordered breathing treatment, Durable Medical Equipment (DME including Positive Airway Pressure compliance monitoring and mask fitting,) or experience in other ambulatory healthcare service.
Salary : $65,600 - $84,810
