The Medical Technologist performs laboratory testing and analysis on patient specimens to support the diagnosis and treatment of disease. This role conducts high and moderate-complexity and waived testing across multiple laboratory disciplines while ensuring accuracy, precision and compliance with regulatory standards through the proper use of quality control, calibrators, and quality assurance method. The Medical Technologist supports patient care by providing reliable test results and maintaining effective collaboration with medical staff. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: 

  • Performs stat and routine and high and moderate-complexity laboratory testing across disciplines including chemistry, hematology, microbiology, blood bank, serology and molecular biology.

  • Follows established procedures for specimen handling, processing, testing, and reporting of results.

  • Adheres to established principles of good lab practice by performing calibrations, documenting quality control activities, and ensuring test system performance prior to verifying test results.

  • Identifies and resolves issues affecting test accuracy through standard troubleshooting methods and  reports concerns to appropriate laboratory leadership.

  • Documents corrective actions when test systems fall outside acceptable performance levels.

  • Maintains laboratory records and ensures compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and safety standards.

  • Communicates effectively with medical staff and departments regarding test results and laboratory services.

  • Demonstrates competency in serving patients across all age groups.

  • Participates in continuing education and maintains professional competency.

  • Supports general laboratory operations, including inventory control and coordination of workflow. 

     

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITES: 

  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Laboratory.  

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:
Required:

  • State of Hawaii Medical Technologist license.

  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures, quality control, regulatory and accreditation requirements.

  • Strong attention to detail, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

  • Effective communication and teamwork skills in a clinical environment. 

Preferred: 

  • Experience in multiple laboratory disciplines.

  • Membership in a nationally recognized medical professional association.  

     

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Prolonged standing, walking, and sitting.

  • Frequent use of hands and coordination for laboratory tasks.

  • Requires strong visual acuity, including color and depth perception.

  • Exposure to infectious materials, chemicals, and potential electrical hazards.

  • Ability to maintain concentration and respond to urgent or emergency situations.
