Medical Laboratory Technician (Per Diem)

POSITION PURPOSE: 

The Medical Laboratory Technician performs laboratory testing and analysis on patient specimens to support the diagnosis and treatment of disease. This role conducts high-complexity testing across multiple laboratory disciplines while ensuring accuracy, quality control, and compliance with regulatory standards. The Medical Laboratory Technician supports patient care by providing reliable test results and maintaining effective collaboration with medical staff. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

• Performs laboratory testing and analysis on specimens across disciplines including chemistry, hematology, microbiology, blood bank, and serology.

• Follows established procedures for specimen handling, processing, testing, and result reporting.

• Maintains quality control by performing calibrations, documenting activities, and ensuring test accuracy.

• Identifies and resolves issues affecting test performance or reports concerns to appropriate leadership.

• Documents corrective actions when test systems fall outside acceptable performance levels.

• Maintains laboratory records and ensures compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.

• Adheres to safety, infection control, and environmental protocols.

• Communicates effectively with medical staff and departments regarding test results and laboratory services.

• Demonstrates competency in serving patients across all age groups.

• Participates in continuing education and maintains professional competency. 

   

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITES: 

• Other duties as assigned by the Director of Laboratory.  

JOB QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:

Required:

• State of Hawaii Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) license.
• Knowledge of laboratory procedures, quality control, and regulatory standards.
• Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively within a medical team. 

Preferred: 

• Experience in multiple laboratory disciplines.

• Membership in a nationally recognized medical professional association. 

   

WORKING CONDITINOS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

• Prolonged standing, walking, and sitting.

• Frequent use of hands and coordination for laboratory tasks. 

• Requires strong visual acuity, including color and depth perception.

• Exposure to infectious materials, chemicals, and potential electrical hazards.

• Ability to maintain concentration and respond to urgent or emergency situations.
