Regular Education Classroom Teacher Job Responsibilities
The regular education teacher at Kaʻōhao Public Charter School plays a vital role in facilitating the academic, social, and emotional development of students in the elementary school setting. They create and implement engaging lesson plans, provide instruction across various subjects, and foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment. The teacher establishes a foundation for lifelong learning and helps students develop essential skills for their educational journey.
We have two full-time teaching positions open. One opening in 5th grade and one opening in 6th grade. In both grade levels, we have two homerooms and we departmentalize. For these roles, the hired teachers will teach language arts and social studies. The math and science are taught by the other grade level teacher.
Teacher and Staff Wellness Program
At Kaʻōhao, we place a strong emphasis on the health and well-being of our faculty and staff. Our Teacher and Staff Wellness Program reflects our belief that supporting educator wellness strengthens our entire school community.
To promote wellness, we provide a plant-based health bar available daily to all employees. Each month, we host a Staff Wellness Day, where employees can participate in activities such as community walks, hikes, ocean paddling, and a variety of wellness classes including yoga, pilates, and breathwork.
In addition, professional massage services are offered twice each month for staff members. We actively encourage our faculty and staff to prioritize their personal well-being and strive to create a culture where wellness is valued alongside professional excellence.
Teacher Built In Planning Support and General Education Educational Assistant Support
We value our teachers’ professional time and recognize the significant effort required to design and implement a meaningful, standards-based curriculum for our students. To support teachers with planning, data analysis, and overall preparation, all homeroom teachers are provided with seven prep blocks per week during the school day. In addition, we schedule most special education and 504 meetings during these prep periods so that teachers can use their after-school time for student support or additional preparation as needed.
Key Responsibilities
Curriculum and Instructional Development:
- Develop and implement age-appropriate lessons plans aligned with the curriculum guidelines and educational standards.
- Use a variety of instructional strategies, resources, and technologies to engage students and promote active learning.
- Deliver instruction in core subjects such as mathematics, language arts, science, social studies, and other relevant subjects.
Classroom Management:
- Establish and maintain a positive and inclusive learning environment conducive to learning.
- Set clear expectations for student behavior and implement consistent discipline strategies. Reinforce and implement the school-wide SMART expectations.
- Encourage student participation, manage transitions, and create a safe and respectful classroom environment.
Student Assessment and Progress Monitoring:
- Assess student learning and progress through various formative and summative assessments.
- Implement Kaohao’s diagnostic universal screener iReady 3 times per year.
- Analyze assessment data to identify individual student needs and adjust instruction accordingly.
- Provide timely and constructive feedback to students and parents/guardians on academic performance and progress.
Individualized Instruction and Differentiation:
- Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of students, including students with varying abilities and backgrounds.
- Provide additional RTI support and enrichment activities to address individual student strengths and challenges.
- Collaborate with other school professionals, such as special education teachers, to support students with different learning needs.
Parent and Community Engagement:
- Maintain regular communication with parents/guardians to discuss student progress, academic goals, and areas of improvement.
- Conduct parent-teacher conferences and provide updates on student performance and behavior.
- Provide parents/guardians with student progress reports at the end of each trimester.
- Collaborate with parents/guardians and involve them in their child’s education by sharing resources and strategies for supporting learning at home.
Professional Development and Collaboration:
- Engage in ongoing professional development activities to enhance teaching strategies, content knowledge, and instructional technology skills.
- Participate in staff meetings, professional learning communities, and other collaborative opportunities to share best practices and improve instructional effectiveness.
- Collaborate with colleagues to develop and/or implement school-wide initiatives or school events.
Classroom Environment and Organization:
- Design and arrange the physical classroom space to optimize learning and ensure a safe and inclusive environment.
- Organize materials, resources, and technology to support effective instruction and student access.
