What are the responsibilities and job description for the Rental Assistance Coordinator position at Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Centers, Inc.?
Provides case management for Ka Hale A Ke Ola (KHAKO) Homeless Resource Centers specific to the Rental Assistance program by identifying and assisting families in obtaining and maintaining permanent, affordable housing. This will include facilitating the rental process, ensuring good tenant/landlord relations, and providing case management to support long-term housing stability.
Summary of Essential Job Functions
- Conduct in-depth interviews with participants regarding finances, and employment, to determine their self-sufficiency and charts the appropriate course of action regarding housing placement. Makes referrals to programs in outside agencies.
- Determine the participant’s eligibility for the Rental Housing Program.
- Develop a budget in collaboration with participant and monitor progress against goals in ongoing participant interactions. Adjust the program as necessary.
- Counsel participants individually, in family or in other small groups regarding options.
- Meet regularly with the housing Program Manager to assess participant status and progress.
- Compile and maintain accurate records, compile data, and prepare reports.
- Develop an understanding and knowledge of social service agencies, housing resources, and other support systems on Maui.
- Provide a consistently positive role model for the participant.
- Act as an advocate for the wellbeing of the participant.
- Communicate with landlord regarding client/tenant compliancy.
Educational Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in human services or behavioral sciences is preferred or a combination of education and related experience equal to four (4) years.
- A minimum of one-years’ experience in related fields including case work

- Ability to define and identify problems or areas requiring change, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions and implement the required change.
- Ability to understand the dynamics of homelessness and relate to the concomitant problems and needs.
- Knowledge of the issues confronting the mentally ill, the substance abuser and abuse victims and of the accepted practices for dealing with them
- Knowledge of accepted case work practices as they apply to clients served.
- Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail.
- Computer literate with Microsoft Office and database software.
- Strong discretion, business ethics and confidentiality.
