What are the responsibilities and job description for the Crew Lead position at JW Kerns, Inc.?
Overview
We are seeking an experienced working field leader to lead a small crew performing agricultural installations, repair and mechanical field work.
This is not a desk supervisor position. The right person will work alongside the crew while planning the job, operating equipment, making good decisions in the field and keeping the crew productive and safe.
Our work involves heavy equipment, suspended loads, and mechanical assemblies. Successful candidates must be able to think ahead, recognize hazards, protect equipment and property, and complete work efficiently without sacrificing safety or quality.
Responsibilities
- Lead and work alongside a small field crew
- Plan daily work and keep crew members productive
- Welding and fabrication.
- Operate lifting and related field equipment
- Safely plan lifts and equipment movement
- Inspect trucks, tools and equipment before jobs
- Make sound field decisions and stop work when conditions are unsafe
- Coordinate materials, tools and job readiness
- Maintain clean and organized trucks, equipment and work areas
- Communicate job status, problems and needs to the Manager
- Train and develop less-experienced crew members
- Take ownership of completing work safely, correctly and efficiently
What We Are Looking For
We are looking for someone who:
- Has previous experience leading people in a hands-on field environment
- Works hard and expects the same from the crew
- Thinks ahead rather than waiting to be told the next step
- Has strong mechanical aptitude and practical problem-solving ability
- Is safety-conscious around heavy equipment and suspended loads
- Takes care of company equipment
- Is dependable, punctual and organized
- Communicates clearly
- Can make decisions without constant supervision
- Takes pride in completing difficult work correctly
Experience in welding and fabrication, irrigation installation, crane/rigging work, agricultural construction, excavation, millwright work, heavy equipment or similar mechanical field work is desirable.
Direct irrigation experience is preferred but is not required for an exceptional candidate with strong mechanical and crew-leadership experience.
Requirements
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record

- Ability to safely perform strenuous outdoor work
- Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds
- Ability to work in varying weather and field conditions
- Willingness to work overtime during busy periods
- Ability to pass required pre-employment screening
We are looking for a working leader, not simply an experienced laborer. The successful candidate will be someone others naturally follow because he or she works hard, makes good decisions, communicates expectations and takes responsibility for the crew's results.
