What are the responsibilities and job description for the Temporary Paralegal (Bilingual) position at Justice & Diversity Center?
The Paralegal reports primarily to the Special Immigrant Juvenile (SIJ) Lead Attorney. The Paralegal will also work closely with other members of the SIJ team for overall support of clients’ needs. Primary duties will include communication with Spanish speaking clients, JDC team members, volunteer attorneys, and court staff, screening litigants for services eligibility, case management, preparing filings, maintaining databases, and drafting case summaries.
- Handle client intake and determine initial eligibility for assistance
- Participate in case review with Lead Attorney
- Interview clients in Spanish to complete intakes and supply information for declarations
- Draft case summaries (English)
- Assist pro bono attorneys to communicate with clients, schedule appointments, and obtain documents
- Travel from JDC offices to San Francisco Superior Court to file documents and pick up documents
- Interpret Spanish/English as needed
- Translate Spanish language documents
- Maintain and enter tracking and statistical information for project
- Assist Lead Attorney with SIJ matters, depending on availability.
Education:
- Experience and skills necessary to perform job duties
- Experience working in legal offices is preferred
- Experience working for or with non-profit organizations is preferred
- Associate Degree or Paralegal Certificate is a plus, but not required
Experience:
- Experience in serving a diverse, low-income community is strongly preferred
- Experience working with Spanish speakers preferred
Skills and Qualifications:
- Fluency in English and Spanish
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to be self-directed, think creatively and exercise good judgement
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice and working with low-income communities is preferred
- Ability to patiently complete lengthy and detailed telephone interview
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
