Job Summary
Medication Aide/Unit Manager. Administers medications and or supervises the administration of medication in accordance with state guidelines and facility policies and procedures. Ensures the day-to-day operations of the facility and reports directly to the supervisor in charge or administration by performing the following duties.
Duties
- Administer medication according to the physician order and state guidelines.
- Reviews all new orders, may be in the form of physician note, discharge summary, FL-2, prescriptions, or report of consultation forms and clarify any order that is unclear or incomplete immediately with prescribing physician and pharmacy.
- Reconciles all orders for new admissions and re-admissions.
- Ensures medication and supplies for proper medication administration are on hand at all times.
- Verifies with pharmacy staff if an order does not appear within 3 hours of sending the order to the pharmacy.
- Schedules medical and non-medical appointments/follow ups and prepares clients travel book for appointments/follow ups to meet routine and acute needs of the clients.
- Maintains client charts to include filing of all orders and information received in the appropriate section immediately upon receipt.
- Reviews client chart to ensure compliance with state regulation and facility policies and procedures.
- Update clients care documents as required by state regulation and facility policy.
- Obtain at least 6 ceu’s annual related to medication administration, participates in annual infection control training, passes competency exam administered during training, and passes the 15-hour medication aide training course followed by passing the medication aide written exam within 60 days of the 15-hour medication aide training course.
- Ensures documentation of communication with all providers, physician, and other related parties.
- Responds to client requests for care, services, and assistance in a reasonable amount of time on a daily basis.
- Performs housekeeping duties to ensure a clean orderly work environment in accordance with the state sanitation guidelines.
- Reports all accidents and incidents to the supervisor in charge, property manager, or the administrator in accordance with facility policies and procedures.
- Prepares meals in accordance with the menus and prescribed diets.
- Answers telephone, takes messages, directs call.
- Communicates with supervisor in charge, property manager, or the administrator regarding client’s status, maintenance, or supplies and personnel issues.
- Maintains the security of the facility according to established procedures including lights, locking doors, activating alarms, and guidelines regarding visitors.
Requirements
- Previous experience in a healthcare setting, particularly in assisted living or nursing home environments, is preferred but not required.
- Knowledge of medication administration practices and physiology is essential.
- Familiarity with electronic health record systems.
- Understanding of HIPAA regulations and commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedures manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measurement, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or listen. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, taste or smell. The employees must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus, and ability to see color.

- Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Certificate
