CEMETERY SUPERINTENDENT

GENERAL

The Juniper Hill Cemetery (the "Cemetery") is organized as a nonprofit corporation under the laws of the State of Rhode Island for the purpose of preserving, maintaining, and perpetuating one of New England's historic garden-style burial grounds. Inspired by the rural cemetery movement of the nineteenth century, this Cemetery is dedicated to the dignity of the deceased, the beauty of the landscape, the education of the public, and the stewardship of our shared heritage for generations to come.

The Cemetery Superintendent is expected to ensure that the mission of the cemetery as described above is fulfilled. The role is primarily responsible for the oversight of Cemetery operations. The role is the primary contact for funeral homes and others who seek to inter remains at Juniper Hill Cemetery. It is also responsible in conjunction with the Bookkeeper for record keeping and financial reporting. Maintaining the beauty and historical relevance of the landscape is a main responsibility.

The Superintendent reports to the Board of Trustees.

As a condition of employment, the Cemetery Superintendent must reside in the Cemetery-owned house known as the Keeper’s Lodge on the premises to provide a continuous active presence for security purposes at Juniper Hill Cemetery. Housing is considered part of the compensation package.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Serves as primary contact for funeral homes.

2. Prepares and implements procedures to be used for the sale of cemetery lots, participates in funeral interment, inurnment, and disinterment arrangements with families and funeral directors, and assist families regarding the size and type of memorials allowed in the Cemetery.

3. Develop and revise policies and procedures for the use of Cemetery services.

4. Collects, deposits, and accounts for funds derived from lot sales, interments and other fees.

5. Reviews and recommends fee revisions for lot sales, interment fees, and other services.

6. Utilizes cemetery software management systems to record lot sales, dates of death, etc.

7. Record Keeping: Update maps to reflect availability and lot sales.

8. Approve all invoices prior to submittal to the Treasurer for payment.

9. Prepare monthly activity report, attend Monthly Trustees’ Meeting and Annual Meeting.

10. In conjunction with the Trustees prepare an annual operating budget and monitor performance to budget and be prepared to discuss at Trustees’ Meeting.

11. Comply with state and local laws governing cemeteries.

12. Consult with area cemetery superintendents on best practices.

13. Oversee the overall maintenance of the grounds. (mowing, line trimming, hedge trimming, roads, stone walls, buildings, etc.) Develop a long-term management plan to maintain the beauty, health and longevity of the cemetery landscape.

14. Provide project oversight of all contractors hired.

15. Responsible for all additional duties as directed from time-to-time by the Board of Trustees.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Prior cemetery management experience.

2. Knowledge of cemetery operating procedures.

3. Knowledge of federal, state and municipal laws governing cemeteries.

4. Ability to maintain accurate records utilizing state of the art computer software systems.

5. Ability to monitor budgets.

6. Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.

7. Work with a variety of people using tact and diplomacy in

sensitive situations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Prior experience managing a garden style cemetery.

2. Prior experience as a cemetery arborist or historic landscape preservationist.

Pay: $70,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
