- Sterile Compounding Preparation:
- Primary responsibility is to draw up pre-filled syringes with attention to accuracy of volume and the removal of air in the syringes.
- Prepare compounded sterile products (CSPs) according to prescription orders under the supervision of a pharmacist as directed.
- Calculate and measure ingredients accurately to ensure correct concentration and dosages.
- Aseptic Technique and Cleanroom Management:
- Maintain a sterile environment within the cleanroom or laminar airflow hood during compounding activities.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow strict aseptic techniques to prevent contamination.
- Monitor environmental conditions, such as air quality and particulate levels, to ensure compliance with cleanliness standards.
- Medication Quality Assurance:
- Perform visual inspections and quality checks on compounded medications to verify integrity, clarity, and absence of particulates.
- Document all compounding activities, including ingredient lot numbers, expiration dates, and compounding procedures.
- Assist in the preparation of batch records, compounding logs, and other documentation required for regulatory compliance.
- Equipment Operation and Maintenance:
- Operate and maintain compounding equipment, including sterile filtration devices, automated compounding systems, and IV pumps.
- Perform routine maintenance and calibration of equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability in medication preparation.
- Troubleshoot equipment issues and collaborate with pharmacy staff or technical support for resolution.
- Inventory Management and Supply Chain Coordination:
- Monitor and manage inventory levels of sterile compounding supplies, medications, and sterile packaging materials.
- Coordinate with purchasing and supply chain departments to order supplies and maintain adequate stock levels.
- Rotate stock and conduct periodic inventory audits to prevent expired medications and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Compliance and Regulatory Standards:
- Adhere to pharmacy policies, procedures, and regulatory guidelines governing sterile compounding practices, including USP <797>, USP <800> and state pharmacy laws.
- Participate in continuing education and training programs to stay updated on sterile compounding practices and regulatory changes.
- Implement quality improvement initiatives to enhance sterile compounding processes and patient outcomes.
- Reports To: Lead Pharmacy Technician
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of a sterile compounding training program or certification (e.g., Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Sterile Compounding Certification) is preferred.
- Licensure: Registration with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy as either a Registered Technician or as a Certified Technician
- Certification: PTCB certification preferred
- Experience: Previous experience in sterile compounding, preferably in a hospital or specialty pharmacy setting.
- Skills:
- Proficiency in aseptic technique and sterile compounding practices.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in medication preparation and documentation.
- Knowledge of pharmaceutical calculations, dilutions, and measurements.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and follow strict protocols and procedures.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
