What are the responsibilities and job description for the Founding Engineer position at June Point Lending?
Reporting to: William DeVar, Technical Co-Founder
Location: Richmond VA (Preferred), Open to exceptional NYC or Remote candidates
June Point Lending is making homeownership possible and more accessible for a creditworthy but underserved segment of the market: business owners, self-employed workers, and real estate investors. Being enterprising and independent shouldn’t mean getting shut out of the housing market - we’re here to fix that.
We’re automating mortgage loan underwriting with the goal of instant, real-time decisions, resulting in wider access and affordability. This speed, certainty and service for our B2B partners allows them to serve more homebuyers, with the products they need, at market leading rates.
The Founding Engineer will operate as technical leader focused on execution, velocity, and practical problem-solving in an early-stage environment. In this role, you will be a critical thought partner to the executive team, identifying opportunities to improve June Point’s product and implementing your proposed solutions. We’re looking for someone with strong product judgment and the ability to drive meaningful impact in an environment built on automation, underwriting logic, and AI-integrated decisioning.
- Engineering Execution – Lead and execute core engineering work, ensuring fast, reliable delivery in an early-stage, high-velocity environment.
- Problem Identification – Surface architectural gaps, operational issues, and improvement opportunities with minimal direction.
- Technical Conviction – Make grounded technical decisions, articulate the rationale, and hold a clear point of view when tradeoffs are required.
- Automation & AI Systems – Develop and refine systems that automate deterministic and probabilistic workflows, including components that leverage integrated AI models.
- Velocity & Quality Management – Drive development throughput, reduce blockers, and ensure the team operates with predictable, consistent velocity.
- Team Leadership – Provide day-to-day technical guidance to a small team and support the growth of engineering capabilities over time.
- Cross-Functional Integration – Work closely with executive leadership and operational teams to ensure engineering outputs match real workflow and underwriting needs.
- Experience – 5–7 years in engineering roles with meaningful exposure to early-stage, venture-backed environments.
- Startup Background – Comfort operating in small, fast-moving companies; big-company experience acceptable if followed by real startup execution.
- AI Tool Orientation - Use of AI tools has supercharged JPL’s development velocity - you should be experienced in using these tools and excited to integrate AI in all parts of your workflow
- Technical Range – Strong engineering fundamentals with the ability to work across systems involved in automation, underwriting logic, and AI-integrated workflows. Experience in full stack web development and building apps from spec -> code -> deployment -> monitoring.
- Ownership Mentality – Takes responsibility for outcomes, drives work to completion, and applies sound judgment on when to escalate versus handle independently.
- Breadth of Capacity - Full stack engineer and product owner who can turn problems into product specs, scope and ship the product, and integrate it into JPL’s broader technical infrastructure
- Collaboration Skills – Communicates clearly with founders and operational teams; aligns quickly without friction.
- Growth Ambition – Interest in taking on broader technical leadership as the team expands, including management responsibilities.
- Competitive Salary, Benefits, and Equity
- Impact – You’ll work on an important and complex problem that is valuable to solve, not only for homebuyers but for the broader housing ecosystem.
- Challenge - We are tackling novel and unsolved problems at the intersection of capital markets, credit risk, technology, and distribution.
- Learning – Hands-on exposure to every step of the mortgage process, with mentorship from experienced operators and underwriters.
- Growth – The chance to take on more responsibility quickly and build toward being a process owner and builder, not just an executor.
- Tools & Autonomy – Access to modern tech and the freedom to test new ways of working, automate tasks, and leave your mark.
- Culture – A lean, collaborative environment where we value speed, clarity, and character over hierarchy.
- Strong Foundation: We are backed by a leading fintech VC and a global investment bank. Our repeat founders and founding team have extensive experience building in fintech and mortgage lending. We know what it takes to build and scale in complex industries.
