What are the responsibilities and job description for the Part-Time Academic Assistant position at JUMOKE ACADEMY CHARTER SCHOOL?
This part-time position is scheduled to work Monday to Friday from 8:15 am to 1:15 p.m. The academic assistant works from 3rd week in August 2026 to last school day in June 2027. Contract is subject to yearly renewal.
Job Description: Academic Assistant
The Academic Assistant (AA) performs varied instructional, supervisory, and clerical tasks throughout the school and on the playground. The AA may be required to assist students with toileting or other bodily functions. Responsibilities may vary depending on the needs of students and the school throughout the year.
QUALIFICATONS:
Required:
∙ Experience working with children
∙ Computer skills
∙ Prek positions will need to be NAEYC certified
Preferred:
∙ Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in a related field
REPORTS TO:
The AA works under the immediate direction and supervision of the assigned teacher(s) or nurse. The
AA is evaluated by and ultimately reports to the building principal or his or her designee. A designated
AA supervisor may be assigned who will be responsible for scheduling and the day to day coverage issues.
A. GENERAL DUTIES:
1. Operates in accordance with established Jumoke Academy policies and administrative regulations.
2. As denoted generally above, the AA will conduct themselves in a professional and respectful manner when interacting/speaking with students, families and other staff. Along with teachers, the AA serves as a role model for our students.
3. Under the direction of the teacher, assists the teacher in preparation of instructional materials.
4. Assists teacher in the implementation of behavioral management strategies/plans.
5. Provides in‐class support for students to reinforce academic concepts presented.
6. Assists teacher in correcting students’ work.
7. Supervises students when teacher is out of the classroom or as part of an assigned duty.
8. Under the direction of the teacher, maintains student data and other records.
9. Consults with relevant faculty regarding students’ needs and provides input about the program to which he/she is assigned.
10. When appropriate, assists teacher in general classroom maintenance.
11. Participates in staff and team meeting and in‐service programs as directed.
12. Maintains confidentiality regarding student information.
13. Shares concerns and information about students directly to the teacher or other relevant faculty without directly relaying information to the families. (It is the responsibility of the teacher to communicate information about a student to the family.)
14. Performs other related tasks that may be assigned by the teacher, supervisor, and/or the principal.
15. Academic Assistants may serve as substitute teachers.
1:1 Academic Assistant
In addition to the general duties, 1:1 Academic Assistants must also adhere to the below .
Technical Duties:
- Ask general education teacher what 1:1 should work on with the students or how the 1:1 should be helping during each class period
- Tell teacher when 1:1 is leaving/returning for prearranged breaks
- 1:1 should be with their student at all times of the day, except for scheduled 15 minute break and lunch
- If scholar has a tracker/behavior plan, mark accordingly based on directions given. Tracker needs to be filled out with fidelity to allow us to make changes as needed and to report progress at PPT meetings. Weekly follow‐up with the Special Education teacher will occur regarding the implementation of the plan.
- Any other duties the Special Education or classroom teacher may assign
Support Duties:
- Provide both verbal and nonverbal reminders to stay on task, begin work, track the speaker
- Check binder for daily organization (especially during downtime) and assist with organization
- Support scholar in writing homework in agenda in each class
- Provide the scholar with physical space to work with peers and ask peers for help, when possible
- During each class period, provide the scholar to take a break – use bathroom, get a rink, take a brief walk, etc. This break should not exceed 5 minutes and should not interfere with the class. (Optional, as needed)
- During transitions, keep within close proximity to scholar, while allowing for space
- Any other duties the Special Education or classroom teacher may assign
Use of personal tablets, laptops, or phones should occur only during regularly scheduled breaks and lunch.
