PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Provide G/T services that enable JISD to meet the state's goal for G/T students which is to ensure that those students who participate in G/T services demonstrate skills in self-directed learning, thinking, research, and communication, while developing innovative products and sophisticated performances that reflect individuality and creativity and are targeted to an audience outside the classroom.  Elementary Gifted and Talented Teacher should kindle a student’s love of learning, desire to stretch and grow, and curiosity for the world around them.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Certification Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements
  • 30-hour foundation course in gifted education
  • Demonstrated competency in the core academic subject area assigned [Physical Education Teachers: Current automated external defibrillator (AED) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificate]
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License
  • Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by the employee.

 

Special Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of core academic subjects assigned
  • Knowledge of curriculum and instruction
  • Knowledge of the Texas State Plan for the Education of G/T students
  • Knowledge of practices for the identification and assessment of G/T students
  • Knowledge of curriculum and instruction for G/T and advanced students
  • Knowledge of project-based learning best practices and the Texas Performance Standards Project
  • Knowledge of: The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for elementary math, science, social studies and RLA
  • Ability to evaluate instruction and teaching effectiveness for advanced students
  • Ability to develop and deliver training to adult learners
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

 

Experience

  • Minimum of three (3) years of classroom teaching experience
  • Experience in the development, implementation, and evaluation of project-based learning
  • Experience teaching G/T students is preferred

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Instructional Strategies

  1. Plan and implement innovative and rigorous academic opportunities that will challenge and inspire students to stretch themselves academically, socially, and personally
  2. Manage complex schedules required to implement both G/T instruction to multiple grade levels and multiple campuses
  3. Communicate with parents and other stakeholders about current and upcoming academic opportunities related to gifted and talented services
  4. Plan and implement community showcases for student advanced products and performances
  5. Plan, present, and evaluate professional development related to G/T services, differentiation, and enrichment and acceleration
  6. Facilitate project-based learning opportunities in several disciplines to provide students with the opportunity for differentiation and the creation of advanced products and performances utilizing the framework from the Texas Performance Standards Project or a similar set of performance standards, curricula, and assessments for differentiating instruction for G/T students
  7. Provide training and support as needed for parent and staff usage of software programs related to G/T identification and services.
  8. Serve as the primary point of contact for gifted and talented services on their campus/es
  9. Train G/T testing staff, administer tests, and evaluate data for G/T identification purposes
  10. Interpret G/T assessment results for administration, teachers, and parents
  11. Participate in campus and district G/T selection and advisory committees as necessary
  12. Maintain G/T records both physically and electronically
  13. Manage changes in G/T services for students including transfer, furlough, and exit processes
  14. Complete all G/T Point of Contact End-of-Year Procedures
  15. Keep campus staff and principal informed about G/T related events and professional development opportunities.

 

Classroom Management and Organization

  1. Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  2. Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  3. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment materials, and facilities.
  4. Assist in selecting books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
  5. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.

 

Communication

  1. Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.

 

Professional Growth and Development

  1. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  2. Comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
  3. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.

 

Other

  1. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  2. Maintain a consistent professional demeanor and appearance
  3. Ensure compliance with the Texas Educator’s Code of Ethics
  4. Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervision and evaluation of District personnel is not a requirement of this position; however, the supervision of students is required. Direct the work of instructional aide(s).

  • Office equipment – persona computer, printer, calculator, multi-line telephone, software programs and peripherals, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to position.
  • Communication equipment – radio communication equipment, cellular telephone
  • Video monitoring equipment

  • Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination, vibration
  • Occasional exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.), work outside, work around moving objects or vehicles, work on uneven surfaces, work alone, work prolonged or irregular hours.
