Job Title: Fatherhood Program Specialist
Reports To: Family Preservation Supervisor
Status: Full Time
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Our Mission: To provide expert, comprehensive services in southeastern Michigan that strengthen children, adults, and families impacted by abuse and neglect, autism, developmental disabilities, and mental health challenges so they are successful in their communities.

Job Summary:
The Fatherhood Program Specialist is to provide in-home support to fathers, including; teaching parenting skills and alternatives to physical punishment, enhancing household management skills, enhancing use of transportation networks, enhancing communication and conflict resolution skills, and enhancing use of community resources.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Plan and implement a service plan, goals, and activities for the father.
  • The Fatherhood Program Specialist shall provide supportive activities and skill-based interventions at a minimum of 2 hours monthly.
  • Provide resources, transportation, and ideas for community linkages based on content of sessions with the father.
  • Work collaboratively with all other service providers involved with the family to assist the father toward goal achievement.
  • Document the use of solution-focused interviewing techniques and positive, empowering, strength-based language in communications with the family and each other.
  • Participates in required trainings.
  • Attend all scheduled team meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications:
  • Work experience within the field, working with children and families with multi-problem issues and the overall ability to relate to and engage with these families is vital.
  • Training, education, and experience in the area of Child Welfare, fostering, or mental health.
  • Knowledge and skills in Fatherhood Initiative services.
  • Ability to engage with, and relate to, families with multi-problems.
  • Skills in crisis intervention, assessment of potentially violent situations, and short-term goal setting.
  • Knowledge of treatment philosophies and strategies of home-based services, including strength-based, solution-focused approaches.
  • Flexibility in scheduling work that allows for extensive client access to staff.
  • 24/7/365 availability.
Ability to provide culturally competent services that shows sensitivity to the service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.

  • Initiative & Independence – demonstrate ability to effectively complete work tasks with minimal direction from supervisor and take initiative to increase effectiveness of work and that of the department.

  • Temperament – maintain emotional control, a positive perspective, and effectively respond to stress on the job.
Education, Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
  • A bachelor’s or Associates degree is required in any field.
  • Valid Michigan Driver’s License, appropriate insurance and use of own vehicle.

Working Conditions:
  • Works in an office environment and in the community as needed.
  • Possible stressful environment working with families and court system.
  • Non-traditional hours occur often due to the need for evening and weekend visitation, events, and trainings, etc.
  • Fast paced, enthusiastic and team oriented workplace.
