  POSITION OVERVIEW

The Electrical Apprentice assists journeymen and foremen in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems in commercial and/or industrial settings. This role is typically part of a registered apprenticeship program that combines on-the-job training with classroom instruction to develop the technical knowledge and hands-on skills necessary to become a licensed journeyman electrician.

Note: The scope and complexity of work will vary based on the apprentice’s current level (1 through 4), in alignment with the company’s Apprenticeship Competency Matrix.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist in installing and supporting electrical conduit systems, including EMT, PVC, Rigid, and Stainless Steel

  • Pull wire and cable through conduit, trays, or raceways under supervision
  • Support the installation of junction boxes, panels, and electrical devices
  • Learn and apply proper conduit bending and support techniques
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
  • Follow instructions from journeymen and foremen to complete tasks safely and accurately
  • Assist in reading and interpreting construction drawings and schematics (increasingly with experience)
  • Participate in jobsite safety meetings, JSAs, and toolbox talks
  • Track work hours, training tasks, and progress toward apprenticeship goals
  • Handle tools, materials, and equipment with proper care
  • Perform additional duties as required based on apprenticeship level and jobsite needs

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is preferred
  • Enrollment and participation of a recognized apprenticeship program or technical school is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical systems, tools, and safety regulations, based on apprentice level according to the company’s Apprenticeship competency matrix
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and excellent communication and interpersonal abilities

EQUIPMENT & APPLICATIONS /WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Lifting and Carrying – Frequently lifting and carrying tools, materials, and equipment, often weighing up to 25-50 lbs.
  • Climbing and Balancing – Using ladders, scaffolding, and lifts to reach high areas for wiring and fixture installations.
  • Crouching and Kneeling – Working in tight spaces like crawlspaces, attics, and vaults.
  • Standing for Long Periods – Spending hours on their feet while wiring or troubleshooting.
  • Repetitive Movements – Engaging in repeated motions such as twisting, bending at the waist, kneeling, stripping wires, twisting connections, and using hand tools continuously
  • Working in Uncomfortable Positions – Holding tools or equipment overhead, reaching into confined areas, or maintaining awkward postures.
  • Exposure to Weather – Working outdoors in extreme heat, cold, rain, or wind
  • Hand and Finger Dexterity – Grasping objects with the use of fingers, palm and wrists to hold/and or manipulate objects (hammers, saws, pencils, pens, etc.) 
  • Pulling and Pushing – Pulling wires through conduits or pushing heavy equipment into place.
  • Carrying Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – Wearing and carrying safety gear like hard hats, gloves, harnesses, and boots.

o   Adjustable wrenches (various sizes)

o   Combination wrench set

·         Saws and Cutting Tools

o   Hacksaw

o   Drywall saw

o   Utility knife

·         Measuring and Marking Tools

o   Tape measure

o   Level (torpedo level)

·         Conduit Tools

o   Conduit reamer

·         Miscellaneous Tools

o   Hammer

o   Fish tape

o   Torpedo level

o   Multimeter or voltage tester

o   Flashlight or headlamp

o   Tool pouch – Belt – or backpack for Tool mobilization
