Job Description

Job Summary: The Police Officer is responsible for the physical protection of District patients, visitors, and personnel consistent with federal, state, and local laws, and District policies and procedures. Performs a full range of duties necessary to enforce the law, (e.g., investigates complaints, maintains order, aids individuals, and identifies criminal offenders). Identifies law enforcement problems, resolves conflicts, and provides other law enforcement services to the public and/or staff as required. The District’s police officer is a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) certified position. Eligible candidates must be able to complete and pass all pre-employment work conditions, and submit to full background investigations (e.g. medical, psychological and polygraph exams; and/or a physical agility test).

Essential Job Functions & Accountabilities

  • Monitors and investigates all reported criminal activity, safety concerns, and unusual incidents on District property, whether dispatched, citizen informed, or personally observed; prepares and files written incident/offense reports as required.
  • Makes arrests as deemed necessary; prepares and completes incident/offense arrest reports and transports subjects to the appropriate confinement facilities.
  • Prohibits the improper and/or unauthorized usage or destruction of hospital property; patrols the interior and exterior of District facilities to deter gatherings of persons, minimize the disruption of patient care and maintain civil order of District properties.
  • Serves as first responder and provides basic first aid during medical incidents (e.g., falls and seizures) that occur; ensures the MET team or ambulance service is notified during such medical events.
  • Assists with transfers of Behavioral Health patients and the transfer of funds as requested.
  • Provides personal escorts for District patients, visitors, and staff to or from any on-campus parking location during non-shift changes when requested or as otherwise directed.
  • Assists District departments with a variety of situations that may affect the continuum of normal hospital operations.
  • Responds to emergency calls (e.g. fires, fire control systems, intrusion alarms, etc.).
  • Interacts with the general public in a professional and appropriate manner.
  • Ensures maintenance requests are forwarded to appropriate departments relative to safety issues to include lighting, equipment failures, etc.
  • Attends all duty shifts, department meetings, and training as scheduled.
  • Must maintain qualification and competency of all weapons authorized by the department for on/off duty use.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must have a basic Peace Officer Certification through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
  • Must have a valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • Completes defensive driving certification within 12 months of hire and maintains certification throughout employment in accordance with district policy.
  • Must be able to pass a full employment background investigation including medical, psychological, and polygraph exams; and/or a physical agility test.
  • Certification as a Mental Health Police Officer must be obtained within 12 months of the date of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience as a police officer or security officer in a healthcare environment.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English).
