Job Description:

Job Summary: The Cardiac MRI Technologist performs specialized cardiac MRI procedures to produce high-quality diagnostic images for the evaluation of cardiac function, viability, cardiomyopathy, congenital heart disease, and vascular conditions. Utilizes advanced cardiac imaging techniques, ECG gating methods, and post-processing applications to ensure image quality and diagnostic accuracy. This role screens and monitors patients throughout procedures, administers contrast media in accordance with established protocols, and collaborates with Radiologists, Cardiologists, and other healthcare professionals to support patient care. The Cardiac MRI Technologist maintains accurate documentation, utilizes PACS, EMR, and related systems, and adheres to departmental policies, safety standards, and quality requirements while contributing to efficient departmental operations and ongoing professional development.

Essential Job Functions & Accountabilities

  • Performs cardiac procedures as ordered and obtains images according to written protocols to include cardiac function, viability, cardiomyopathy, and vascular imaging.
  • Performs cardiac MRI examinations utilizing appropriate acquisition techniques, imaging protocols, and ECG gating methods to ensure diagnostic image quality.
  • Monitors ECG waveforms during cardiac MRI procedures, identifies rhythm irregularities that may affect image acquisition, and implements appropriate adjustments to optimize image quality.
  • Obtains high-quality cardiac MRI images utilizing ECG gating, breath-hold techniques, and cardiac-specific imaging sequences.
  • Assists Radiologists and Cardiologists in completing cardiac MRI studies including viability, functional assessment, cardiomyopathy, congenital heart, and vascular imaging.
  • Monitors patients throughout cardiac MRI procedures for changes in condition, cardiac rhythm irregularities, or contrast-related reactions and escalates concerns appropriately.
  • Positions patients’ appropriately using immobilization and protective equipment as directed by the provider.
  • Organizes and accurately performs the individual steps in established procedures in the proper sequence. Reviews, manipulates, and evaluates images to deliver high-quality diagnostic images. This includes any required post processing at remote workstations.
  • Screens and interviews each patient using designated MRI Patient Clinical Assessment Form.
  • Administers IV contrast with proper dosage according to department policy. Documents dosage in permanent record.
  • Performs routine non-cardiac MRI exams, in addition to cardiac MRI exams.
  • Performs routine assignments using existing procedures, and has conceptual knowledge of theories, practices, and procedures within a discipline, typically acquired through technical training.
  • Utilizes Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS), Electronic Medical Records (EMR), and other department-specific software applications to support patient care, documentation, workflow management, and operational efficiency.
  • Participates in the equitable distribution of departmental workload assignments to support efficient operations, timely service delivery, and optimal patient care.
  • Performs assigned duties in a variety of clinical environments and locations, adapting to changing operational needs and work assignments.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Completion of JCERT approved school of Radiology Technology or ACR approved training course.
  • 3 plus years of experience working as an MRI Technologist.
  • 2 plus years working in MRI Cardiac Imaging; to include experience with ECG gating, contrast administration, and cardiac MRI protocols.
  • Certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in MRI, American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists (ARMRIT), or MRI certification eligible; must obtain within 12 months of hire date.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) by first day of employment is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified by the State of Texas as a Medical Radiologic Technologist (MRT).
  • Associate degree in Radiologic Sciences.
