Position Overview
We are seeking a compassionate and motivated Peer Support Specialist to join our team. In this role, you will use your lived experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery to provide support, encouragement, and guidance to individuals currently navigating their recovery journey. You will serve as a role model of hope, resilience, and empowerment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide one-on-one peer support services to clients in recovery
- Share lived experiences appropriately to inspire and promote recovery
- Assist clients in developing recovery goals and wellness plans
- Facilitate peer-led support groups and psychoeducational sessions
- Help clients build coping skills, resilience, and community connections
- Advocate for clients’ needs and support access to resources
- Collaborate with clinical staff as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with agency standards
- Uphold confidentiality and ethical guidelines at all times
Qualifications
- Lived experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery
- Active recovery (typically 1–2 years preferred, depending on organization)
- Certified Peer Support Specialist (or willingness to obtain certification within a specified timeframe)
- High school diploma or GED required; additional education preferred
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries while offering empathetic support
- Basic computer skills for documentation
Preferred Skills
- Experience working in behavioral health, substance use treatment, or community services
- Knowledge of recovery-oriented systems of care
- Familiarity with trauma-informed care principles
- Group facilitation experience
Work Environment
- Outpatient clinic, community-based settings, or hybrid (depending on role)
- May include evenings or weekends
