Overview
The Journal of Business, a bi-weekly published newspaper primarily serving Spokane and Kootenai counties, is seeking a news assistant/research coordinator to join our newsroom.
The role of a news assistant is to assist the Journal's editorial team in all aspects of delivering news and information to the Inland Northwest business community.
Ideal candidates must be detail oriented and should possess a strong news judgment; written and communication skills; the ability to identify, pitch, and proofread news stories; experience conducting interviews in person, over the phone, and/or virtually; and the ability to meet multiple deadlines each week.
Responsibilities
- Monitor media coverage and stay informed of trends, projects, organizations, people, and other happenings in the Inland Northwest business community.
- Produce one email newsletter per week.
- Maintain and update media contact databases.
- Fact checking and copy editing articles that adhere to AP style guidelines to ensure accuracy and maintain journalistic standards.
- Promptly respond to media inquiries.
- Compile, maintain, and archive communications, surveys, and other information as needed for business licenses, real estate transactions, lists, people, and calendar pages.
- Meet multiple deadlines per bi-weekly issue.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field.
- Strong writing, editing, interviewing, and communication skills.
- Strong organizational and time management abilities and deadline management.
- Familiarity with The Associated Press Stylebook.
- Proficiency with Adobe and Microsoft applications, including InDesign, Word, Outlook, Excel, and Teams.
- Reliable transportation.
- Responds well to constructive feedback.
- A keen eye for detail with excellent research skills to support fact-based reporting.
- Able to represent the Journal of Business in a professional manner in person, by phone, through email communications, and on social media platforms.
Pay: Up to $39,400.00 per year
Applicants must be available to work in person at the Journal of Business office Monday - Friday, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., and sometimes later as necessary.
This is not a remote/hybrid position.
