POSITION: Custodian
QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Previous custodial or janitorial experience preferred, especially in a school or similar environment. Manages time so that scheduled work and duties are completed daily. Knowledge of cleaning chemicals, supplies, and equipment. This job may require physical tasks such as lifting (up to 39 pounds), bending, reaching, and standing for extended periods. This position requires a reliable, punctual, and detail-oriented employee with good communication skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team. Understanding of safety procedures and regulations is required.
REPORTS TO: Maintenance Supervisor and/or Building Principal.
JOB GOAL: The school custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and general upkeep of the school building and grounds. This role ensures a clean, hygienic, and safe environment for students, staff, and visitors by performing routine cleaning tasks, minor maintenance, and adhering to health and safety standards.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES*:
- Clean and sanitize classrooms, hallways, drinking fountains, restrooms, cafeterias, gyms, and offices.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, and polish floors regularly.
- Empty trash receptacles and dispose of waste properly.
- Maintain cleanliness of windows, walls, and other surfaces.
- Perform minor repairs and report major maintenance issues to the facilities manager.
- Ensure that cleaning supplies and equipment are properly stored and maintained.
- Set up and arrange furniture and equipment for school events or meetings as needed.
- Monitor and maintain the security of the building, including locking/unlocking doors and windows.
- Follow school safety protocols, including proper handling of hazardous materials and equipment in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
- Assist with snow removal, lawn care, and other outdoor maintenance tasks as necessary.
- Respond promptly to emergency cleaning requests or spills.
- Maintain accurate logs of cleaning schedules and maintenance activities.
- Comply with all health, safety, and sanitation regulations, including OSHA standards.
- Follow all District policies and procedures.
- Adaptability with schedule to meet the school needs.
- Perform other duties as required and/or directed by the Maintenance Supervisor and/or Principal.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work primarily indoors but may include outdoor tasks in a variety of weather conditions.
- May require working before or after school hours, evenings, or weekends.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Compensation and benefits in accordance with Bartlett School District Non-Contracted Personnel Policy.
WORK YEAR: Full-Time, year round position.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Bartlett School District Non-Contracted Personnel Policy provisions on evaluation of Support Services Personnel.
