Student Advocate (High School Alternative Program)  Maximum of 550 hours annually 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  1. Teacher Certification
  2. A bachelor’s degree from an approved institution is preferred.
  3. Possess the knowledge, skills, abilities, and physical attributes necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
  4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate or acceptable.

 

REPORTS TO:

Principal of the High School Alternative Program

 

JOB GOAL:

The goal of a Student Advocate is to support each student enrolled in the High School Alternative Program in their effort to complete the requirements for graduation by providing curricular support, social guidance, and individualized advocacy that eliminates barriers to diploma completion.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Serve as a liaison between the High School Alternative Program and NKCS comprehensive high schools.
  2. Serve as a member and attend meetings of the Student Assistance Team for the high schools.  
  3. Lead the intake process for students newly admitted to HSAP
    • Gather student records to complete paperwork for enrollment.
    • Co-facilitate with Principal or Social Worker student and parent intake conference.
    • Confirm transportation.
  4. Foster relationships with students to support their progress in the program.
  5. Assist HSAP teachers with the administration of statewide testing and required testing associated with graduation.
  6. Assist with the High School Alternative Program Back to School night, community nights, and events associated with graduation.
  7. Assist HSAP teachers to track students’ progress toward completion of all required components outlined for graduation. When applicable, assisting students to complete portfolios and work-based learning expectations.
  8. If applicable, provide specialized instruction to students with disabilities both in the regular education classroom and in separate special education classes or settings.
  9. If applicable, maintain records regarding individual student progress towards IEP goals and objectives, services and accommodations provided, parent contacts, notices and other documentation as required by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) regulations, and the Director of Special Education. 
  10. Assist with attendance calls, transportation arrangements, and technology tickets as needed.
  11. Supervise students on field trips to local businesses, community college campuses, and work-based learning experiences.
  12. Fully participate in professional development and meetings as directed by the Principal of the High School Alternative Program.
  13. Complies with all district rules, regulations, and policies.
  14. Other duties as specified by the supervisor as needed.

                                                                                     

 TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:                                                Maximum of 550 hours annually, August through June as                                                                                                    needed.

 FLSA:                                                                                Exempt

 

RETIREMENT:                                                                    Public School Retirement System (PSRS)

 

CLEARANCES:                                                                    Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance

 

EVALUATION:                                                                    Performance of this job will be evaluated under the provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluations utilizing the Performance-Based Teacher Evaluation process.
