Job Summary:

The Manager, Public Affairs, works independently with general guidance and supervision from the Director of Public Affairs. This role is responsible for managing the Department’s database, websites, writing/editing publications/documents assigned by the Director, serving on advisory bodies (municipal and environmental) that invite/accommodate Association membership, monitoring regulation and legislation, representing the Association, and coordinating public presentations, stakeholder outreach, social media posts, and club engagement.

This is a full-time, exempt position with compensation starting at $71,000.00.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Managing the Department’s database and maintaining the records and work product of the various boards, committees, commissions, and agencies with which the Department routinely interacts in the execution of its duties;
  • Managing content of the Public Affairs hub and the California Alliance for Golf (CAG) website and corresponding newsletters;
  • Assisting in the writing and editing copy for FORE and the other publications the Department regularly writes for, per the discretion and direction of the Director;
  • Assists with drafting formal “Comment Letters” and other submittals to governmental agencies;
  • Tracking and collating legislation and regulation, at the local, state and national levels;
  • Representing the Association on select advisory and/or ad hoc bodies that invite and/or accommodate Association membership;
  • Representing the Association’s interests in the absence of the Director;
  • In collaboration with the Director, creating and sustaining relationships with allied organizations and public agencies;
  • In collaboration with the Director, engaging the Association’s membership base in the value proposition of public/governmental affairs;
  • Coordinating with the Director on the development of alliances, strategies, narratives, and initiatives in furtherance of the Department’s mission;
  • Developing ongoing expertise regarding the core functionality of a state/regional golf association in general and the SCGA in particular; and
  • Performing other duties as may be assigned by the Director.

Demonstrated Skills, Abilities And Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university preferred.
  • Experience working in public relations, public affairs, public policy, community organizing, or closely related field
  • Experience working either directly in, or closely with, government administration strongly preferred
  • An aptitude and/or strong interest in public policy, advocacy, public affairs, and/or government.
  • Experience in the golf industry preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).

  • Is self-directed with a strong work ethic.

Schedule And Travel:

The job requires a large amount of travel, mainly throughout Southern California. Trips to Sacramento are expected approximately 6-8 times per year, and travel to Washington D.C. is expected usually at least once per year. The employee must be able to travel to in-person events in a timely and efficient manner, and can expect to be in the field most days.

Due to the nature of working with public and government agencies, this position will be required to work evening, and at times may need to have a flexible schedule over a seven-day week. The employee must be willing to work weekends, early mornings, and evenings.
