Duties

  • Construct, repair, maintain, and calibrate tools, jigs, fixtures, dies, punches, and gauges.
  • Design, experiment, develop, manufacture modify, and/or shop test prototype and pilot models of ammunition tools, machines, and gages used for renovation, demilitarization, demolition etc.
  • Operate all types of machine tools involving close tolerances, such as bench work to .0001 inch.
  • Perform design and experimentation work in the development of new or modification of existing ammunition machines.
  • Interpret work orders, drawings, and blueprints; and recommends correction of drawings when necessary.
  • Determine machines to be used, establishes machine feeds and speeds, sets up and operates all types of machine tools.
  • Perform cutting, turning, drilling, boring, reaming, tapping, shaping, grinding, lapping, and finishing operations, involving tolerances from .005 to .0001 inch.
  • Perform related bench work or fitting and assembling parts to produce end items or close tolerances with fine, smooth finishes.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Tool Maker without more than normal supervision. These duties or tasks include: Programming, setting up and operating machines of the machinist trade, i.e., internal and external grinders, tool and cutter grinders, milling machines, lathes, shapers, and profile grinders; to include material selection and machining to very close tolerances. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work in this occupation requires standing, stooping, bending, and reaching; moderate lifting up to 40 pounds when moving machine attachments and work pieces. Work may be done in awkward and cramped positions.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Toolmaker normally works inside a machine shop environment wherein there is danger to the skin and eyes from flying metal chips. Possibility of skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants and abrasive compounds; danger to the fingers, hands and other parts of the body from cutting tools, and moving parts of machines.
