Land Survey Crew Chief

Johnston's Surveying LLC
Oviedo, FL Full Time
POSTED ON 8/12/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 9/10/2026

Position Overview
Johnston's Surveying is hiring a Crew Chief to lead field crews of Survey Techs on boundary, topographic, and construction staking surveys across Central Florida. You're the senior field presence on-site — running the crew, owning the data quality, and making the field calls that a tech isn't yet trusted to make. This is a leadership role with a clear path to Party Chief.

Key Responsibilities

  • Crew Leadership: Direct a crew of 1-2 Survey Techs — assign tasks, set pace, and keep the crew productive through the full workday.

  • Field Judgment: Make the on-the-ground calls a tech can't — methodology decisions, boundary interpretation issues, when to re-shoot, when to escalate to the office.

  • Equipment Ownership: Operate and maintain GPS/GNSS units, robotic total stations, and data collectors; responsible for the crew's equipment condition and calibration.

  • Quality Control: Review field data before leaving the site. A bad shot on-site is a call-back on JSI's dime — this is the seat that stops that.

  • Training: Develop Survey Techs on the crew — proper equipment use, field technique, safety habits.

  • Client & Site Coordination: Primary point of contact on-site for clients, contractors, and property owners. Owns communication back to the office same-day on delays, access issues, or scope changes.

  • Safety: Enforces field safety standards for the crew and is accountable for the crew's compliance.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Experience: 3 years of field surveying experience, with demonstrated crew leadership. Prior Crew Chief title preferred but not required if you've been running a crew informally.

  • Technical Proficiency: Strong command of GPS/GNSS, robotic total stations, and data collection software (Trimble, Carlson, or similar), plus the ability to troubleshoot equipment issues in the field without office support.

  • Physical Stamina: Full-day capability standing, walking uneven terrain, and lifting/carrying up to 40 lbs of equipment.

  • Leadership: Comfortable directing others, owning outcomes, and being the one who answers for the crew's work.

  • Attention to Detail: Understands that field accuracy is the foundation everything downstream depends on.

  • Environmental Adaptability: Full-shift outdoor work in Florida heat, rain, and variable terrain.

  • Valid driver's license, able to operate a company vehicle to job sites.
