Summary 
The Part-Time Simulation Specialist/Educator supports the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program by managing and maintaining simulation and laboratory equipment to ensure high-quality, hands-on learning experiences. This position is responsible for preparing, operating, and troubleshooting simulation scenarios and lab setups, as well as updating and maintaining simulation software to ensure optimal performance and realism. This position collaborates closely with faculty and staff to create realistic training environments that enhance student learning and clinical readiness. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Prepare, set up, and break down simulation and laboratory equipment for EMS training sessions.
  • Operate and troubleshoot high-fidelity manikins, task trainers, and related simulation technology.
  • Update, maintain, and ensure the functionality of simulation software and associated systems.
  • Collaborate with EMS faculty to design and implement realistic simulation scenarios.
  • Monitor simulation sessions to provide technical support and ensure smooth operation.
  • Maintain inventory of simulation and lab equipment, supplies, and consumables.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on simulation equipment.
  • Assist in the orientation and training of faculty and staff on simulation technology and best practices.
  • Ensure simulation environments are clean, organized, and compliant with safety standards.
  • Stay current with emerging simulation technologies and recommend improvements or upgrades as needed.
  • Document equipment usage, maintenance, and incident reports as required.
  • Design and implementation of simulation-based education. 
  • Conduct simulation sessions using various modalities (e.g., manikins, standardized patients, virtual reality).
  • Facilitate learner engagement and critical thinking during simulations.
  • Lead structured debriefing sessions to reinforce learning and improve clinical decision-making.

  • Strong technical skills, including troubleshooting hardware/software and managing updates.
  • Familiarity with simulation equipment and software
  • Familiarity with audiovisual systems and networking as related to simulation environments.
  • Strong troubleshooting and technical support skills
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced educational environment.
  • Ability to work a schedule that may include evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently on wide variety of professional tasks.

Education Minimum: Associate’s degree or higher in a related field such as Information Technology, Healthcare Simulation, Biomedical Engineering, or Emergency Medical Services.

Experience Minimum: 1 to 2 years of experience in healthcare, education, IT, or a related technical field.

Preferred Education:  
  • Experience working with simulation equipment and software platforms (e.g., Laerdal, CAE, Gaumard).
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology and clinical procedures, particularly in EMS or allied health settings.

Preferred Experience: Prior experience in a simulation lab or healthcare training setting.Language Skills
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and procedure manuals. 
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. 
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
               
Mathematical Skills     
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. 
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability 
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. 
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
     
Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should be proficient in core technical skills, hardware & AV integration, and software & programing.

Required: None
Preferred:
  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) 
  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) 
  • Certified Modeling and Simulation Professional (CMSP)
  • North Carolina Level I EMS Instructor
