Job Description

Under the direction of the Ambulance Director, the Assistant Director, Education Supervisor or Field Supervisor, is responsible to provide EMT level patient care in accordance with the ambulance service protocols and under the direction of the medical control physician or physician designee.

Knowledge of:

  • EMS and the operations of an advanced ambulance service
  • EMT level pre-hospital medical care standards
  • County roads, landmarks, use of maps and route planning
  • Traffic laws and regulations in the State of Iowa
  • Safe work practices and emergency vehicle operations
  • English language to include grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and vocabulary

Ability to:

  • Be detail-oriented and accurate while performing duties
  • Operate an emergency vehicle safely in all weather conditions
  • Represent Johnson County and perform duties in a professional, responsible and trustworthy manner
  • Organize and prioritize multiple tasks and competing priorities
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and security of information as appropriate
  • Keep accurate records and reports
  • Interact effectively with persons from widely divergent backgrounds, interests and points of view
  • Provide customer service that is courteous and responsive
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, health care professionals, supervisors, department heads and members of the public
  • Use a computer for the purpose of data entry, word processing, presentations, email and Internet
  • Operate common office equipment such as calculators, fax machines, photo copiers and multi-line telephones
  • Have clarity of speech, hearing, and writing which permits effective communication
  • Receive and transmit messages via a two-way radio
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Organize and present factual information and ideas clearly and concisely, in oral and written form
  • Handle low to high levels of stress, meet deadlines and solve problems appropriate to the position
  • Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time
  • Lift, move, carry, push and/or pull a minimum of 50 pounds and occasionally up to 125 pounds
  • Sit, squat, kneel, crawl, jump, twist, reach, bend, stoop, stand, and step into and out of an ambulance
  • Endure exposure to adverse weather conditions and terrains while conducting field work
  • Handle potential exposure to harmful blood and body fluids, infectious disease, harmful chemicals and drugs
  • Have sufficient manual dexterity to make handwritten notations and which permits moderate use of a keyboard and mouse
  • Have sufficient vision which permits light to moderate production and review of a wide variety of materials both in electronic and hard copy forms
  • Have sufficient personal mobility to complete work at various locations
  • Work flexible schedule and be on-call as assigned

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

High school graduate or equivalent AND successful completion of the prescribed course curricula at an approved EMT training program as determined by the Iowa State Bureau of EMS.

Special requirements: Must pass background check. Current EMT certification in the State of Iowa and current BCLS provider certification. As a mandatory reporter, maintain approved training on child and dependent adult abuse reporting requirements. Valid driver’s license and insurable under county liability coverage. Safe driving record. Up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination.

SPECIFIC DUTIES: to be performed satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Responds to request for service and/or calls for service as directed.
  • Transports patients to their respective destination.
  • Performs duties of an EMT as defined in service protocols approved by the Service Program Medical Director.
  • Completes and submits patient care report, billing sheet and other related documentation.
  • Represents Johnson County and participates in training/professional development activities and work related meetings as requested.
  • Follows GuideLink Center (GLC) protocol to determine if a patient is medically stable to remain at GuideLink Center.
  • Assists with oral fluid administration in the GLC detoxification process.
  • Provides prompt evaluation and treatment for individuals presenting with acute symptoms or distress.
  • Provides a safe, medically supervised space for GLC individuals withdrawing from alcohol or other substances.
  • Assists Mobile Crisis with GLC intake process, assessing vital signs and basic medical assessment as needed.
  • Assists with Johnson County Ambulance Service (JCAS) assigned duties when available.
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with County/Department policies, procedures, safety practices and the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Attends work regularly at the designated place and time.
