COUNTY OF JOHNSON, INDIANA
POSITION: Assistant Court Reporter
DEPARTMENT: Superior Court 3
WORK SCHEDULE: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., M - F
STATUS: Full-time

Incumbent serves as Assistant Court Reporter for Superior Court 3, responsible for preparing and maintaining records of court proceedings and assisting the public.
DUTIES:
Maintains chronological case summaries, including entering pleadings, notices, and orders.
Responds to public inquiries regarding case status and explaining court procedures.
Processes pleadings and orders on Odyssey Case Management system, scans pleadings, and orders and exhibits as necessary to convert paper documents to electronic records.
Interacts with attorneys regarding status of monies, correcting manner in which digital records were filed.
Maintains court calendar, including scheduling/rescheduling hearings and jury trials, notifying appropriate parties, printing calendar from computer daily, and entering cases on computer.
Performs various administrative duties before and after court proceedings, including preparation of notices, orders, and correspondence and compiling/preparing reports.
Answers telephone and greets office visitors, providing information and assistance, taking messages, and/or transferring/directing to appropriate individual or department.
Performs duties of other Department personnel in their absence or as needed.
Performs related duties as assigned.
I. JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DIFFICULTY OF WORK:
High school diploma or GED. Post-secondary training including paralegal training is preferred.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Working knowledge of law, standard office, legal and court policies and procedures and related terminology, and ability to apply such knowledge to a variety of interrelated processes, tasks, and operations.
Ability to type with speed and accuracy and properly operate a variety of standard office equipment, including computer, calculator, transcriber/Dictaphone, fax machine, copier, scanner, telephone, and microfilm reader.
Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, legal and medical terminology and spelling, and ability to prepare correspondence and documents as assigned.
Ability to obtain translation so as to interact with litigants from a non-English speaking background.
Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of Court records and department information and records according to State requirements.
Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace , and personal conduct.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, attorneys, litigants, state judicial agencies, jurors, law enforcement agencies, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
Ability to work with others in a team environment and understand and follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.
Ability to work on several tasks at the same time, work rapidly for long periods, occasionally under time pressure, and complete assignments effectively amidst frequent distractions.
Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions and present findings in oral or written form.
Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate/hostile persons.
Ability to occasionally work extended hours.
RESPONSIBILITY:
Incumbent performs standard, recurring duties according to a formal schedule and the service needs of the public. Work is reviewed primarily for technical accuracy, soundness of judgment, compliance with legal requirements, and effect on department goals/objectives. Assignments are guided by broad policies and/or general objectives. Decisions are always determined by specific instructions or existing, well-established policies and procedures. Work errors are primarily detected or prevented through procedural safeguards. Undetected work errors could result in inconvenience to other agencies or the public.
PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:
Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other County departments, attorneys, litigants, state judicial agencies, jurors, law enforcement agencies, and the public, for purposes of exchanging information and explaining policies and procedures.
Incumbent reports directly to Superior Court 3 Judge.
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Incumbent performs duties in a standard office environment and courtroom involving sitting for long periods at a computer, carrying/lifting objects weighing under 50 pounds, keyboarding, speaking clearly, pushing/pulling objects, bending, reaching, crouching/kneeling, close/far vision, hearing sounds/communication, handling/grasping/fingering objects, and working with/exposed to violent/irate individuals.
