Summary:
The Surgical Clinical Nurse Reviewer’s chief responsibility is to collect and submit reliable data to the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP). This is accomplished through high-quality clinical screening, data compilation, documentation and entry into the ACS NSQIP database of all eligible surgeries for the medical center. The SCNR works closely with the Surgeon Champion, members of the Department of Surgery(including surgeons, anesthesiologists, OR staff) and staff members of surgical practices to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement and other special projects. Objectives of the position include but are not limited to:
1. Establishes effective working relationships with members of the hospital community, especially
staff in the Surgery, Medicine, Nursing, Medical Records, Information Systems, and the
Performance Improvement/Quality Team
departments whose support is necessary for the management and success of the program
2. Identifies surgical patients for inclusion in the program registry through application of strict
program inclusion/exclusion criteria and randomization protocol.
3. Exhibits appropriate utilization of resources necessary to obtain valid, reliable data for entry into
the Program.
4. Contacts patients and/or families via telephone and/or written communications post-operatively
for the purpose of identifying possible occurrences associated with surgical procedures performed
at the hospital.
5. Serves as an educational resource on the ACS NSQIP for internal and external audiences by
developing educational material and delivering presentations.
6. Demonstrates excellent professional oral and written communication skills.
7. Identifies opportunities to feedback ACS NSQIP data to relevant groups or meetings.
8. Collects preoperative, operative, and postoperative data components for the program through the effective utilization of the hospital record systems.
9. Responsible for the accurate and timely entry of data into the program’s database and meets the caseload accrual requirement protocol.
10. Reviews weekly site accrual report on the database and resonds to accrual report alerts.
Requirements:
Minimum three (3) years’ experience in inpatient surgical nursing required. Successful management of priorities, multiple projects, and deadlines is required. Computer and Internet skills and experience required—familiarity and comfort with MS Office products is essential for success in this position (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access). Clinical chart review and abstraction experience required. Database data entry and/or management experience, statistical knowledge, quality improvement and patient safety knowledge and application experience preferred. Ability to interact with all members of the surgical team and administrative staff in a professional and courteous manner. Master's or Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred. Ability to complete all pre-training, on-site training, and post-training modules and pass the training post test.
