Role Description The Director of Development is a full-time, on-site role based in Baltimore, MD, responsible for leading and executing major fundraising strategies to advance Johns Hopkins’ institutional priorities. This role oversees a portfolio of major and principal gift prospects, designs individualized cultivation and solicitation plans, and engages donors and volunteers through personal visits, events, and written communications. The Director collaborates closely with faculty, clinicians, senior leadership, and colleagues across DAR to align fundraising initiatives with academic and clinical goals, create compelling cases for support, and ensure effective stewardship of donors. Day-to-day responsibilities include managing development staff, setting and monitoring fundraising goals, preparing briefings and proposals, tracking activity and results in donor databases, and reporting on progress to leadership. The Director also contributes to strategic planning, participates in cross-campus initiatives, and represents DAR and Hopkins at internal and external meetings and events.


Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in fundraising, including major and planned gifts, donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Skills in relationship management, stakeholder engagement, and collaboration with faculty, clinicians, and senior leaders.
  • Strong abilities in strategic planning, goal setting, and program or team leadership within a development or related environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including proposal writing, presentation skills, and the ability to convey complex ideas clearly.
  • Proficiency in using donor management or CRM systems, data analysis for fundraising metrics, and basic office productivity tools.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects, set priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain attention to detail in a fast-paced setting.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and to ethical, donor-centered fundraising practices.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree or relevant professional certifications (e.g., CFRE) are preferred.
  • Several years of progressively responsible development or related experience, ideally in a complex academic, medical, or nonprofit institution.
