This is a full time remote role. Applicants residing in MD, VA, DC, PA, DE and FL will be given first consideration. 

Summary:

The Coding Educator is responsible for developing and delivering coding education programs to support coding accuracy, regulatory compliance, and revenue integrity within professional billing operations. Conducts coding audits and reviews to evaluate coding accuracy, identify documentation or coding trends, and determine targeted education needs for coding staff and providers. Utilizes audit findings, regulatory updates, and payer policy changes to design and deliver training initiatives that improve coding quality and documentation practices. Collaborates with coding leadership and operational teams to address coding discrepancies and support continuous improvement in coding performance. Ensures coding practices comply with federal, state, and payer regulatory requirements as well as organizational coding policies and guidelines.

Job Functions:

  • Develops and delivers coding education and training programs for coding staff based on identified learning needs, audit findings, and operational priorities to support accurate coding and optimal revenue cycle performance.
  • Conducts coding quality reviews and audits to evaluate coding accuracy, identify documentation or coding gaps, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards and payer guidelines.
  • Provides education, guidance, and feedback to coding staff to support accurate code assignment and assist with complex coding scenarios.
  • Develops and maintains coding education materials, including training manuals, reference guides, presentations, and other learning resources to support continuous staff development.
  • Monitors coding guideline updates, regulatory changes, and training outcomes, using audit results, metrics, and feedback to refine education initiatives and ensure ongoing compliance.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in health information management, nursing, or a related field (Required) 
  • One year of relevant education may be substituted for one year of required work experience or one year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.
  • Five (5) or more years of professional medical coding experience, including experience supporting coding education, training, quality review, or audit activities required.
  • CPC (Certified Professional Coder), CCS-P (Certified Coding Specialist – Physician), or equivalent nationally recognized coding certification required.
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and professional billing coding guidelines.
  • Strong understanding of Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payer policies, coding compliance standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience developing or delivering coding education, training materials, or documentation improvement initiatives for coding staff or clinical teams.
