If so, the National Security Analysis Department (NSAD), Operations and Programs Analysis Group, at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is interested in talking to you!

 

 

The Operations and Programs Analysis group work closely together to conduct operationally-grounded analyses of military systems, emerging technologies, and their tactical applications. Our analyses inform military Service acquisition processes, development of Service and Joint operating concepts and plans, and provide data-driven insights to senior decision-makers. At APL, we emphasize intellectual integrity, professional growth, and collaboration.

 

As a Senior Modeling and Simulation Analyst in the NSAD Operations and Programs Analysis Group, you will:

  • Lead and contribute to advanced modeling, simulation, and operational analyses of current and future military systems, supporting tactical development, acquisition strategies, and prototype evaluations.
  • Apply a broad set of analytical tools, including AFSIM and other Department of Defense Modeling and Simulation environments, as well as wargaming, statistical analysis, and Artificial Intelligence, to complex problems.
  • Collaborate closely with military and government sponsors to understand mission challenges, operational constraints, and policy implications.
  • Engage with experts across APL and the broader defense community to stay at the forefront of emerging technologies and innovative analytical approaches.
  • Participate in field tests, military exercises, and operational assessments, gathering critical data and insights to enhance analytical fidelity.
  • Develop clear, concise, and impactful reports and presentations for technical and senior leadership audiences, ensuring findings drive informed decision-making.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you have...

  • At least a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Computer Science, or another related discipline.
  • Relevant experience in operational analysis, Modeling and Simulation, and/or military systems evaluation.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in AFSIM or other DoD modeling and simulation tools.
  • Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and intellectual curiosity with a track record of tackling complex challenges.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey technical insights to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, balancing multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • The ability to obtain a Top Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

 

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you have...

  • An advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in Engineering, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Computer Science, or another related discipline.
  • Proficiency in programming and data analysis tools such as Python, MATLAB, C , and/or Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning applications.
  • Relevant operational or analytic expertise via prior experience working for the Department of Defense, or for other U.S. federal or state government agencies.
  • Possess an active Secret or higher security clearance.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development. $90,000 Annually

Maximum Rate

$350,000 Annually
